Dropout sizes for 7/8/9spd rear hubs

Is there a specific dropout size required for each type of rear hub?
I've measured the width between the inner faces of the rear dropouts on my Lava Dome and it comes to around 133mm, possibly 134.
It currently has a 7 speed STX hub as fitted from new (therefore now 13 years old). Would an 8 or even 9 speed hub and cassette fit in there?

you say you have measured the drop outs?
what is the length of the hub?
should be 135mm for most 7spd and all 8/9spd mtb hubs.
BUT some 7spd were 130mm.
so measure the hub OLD. or is the hub a tight fit os a slack fit."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Ok, looks like the distance between the dropouts is definitely nearer 135 than 130.
The hub is a pretty slack fit at 133mm (best measurement I can get with the cassette stil in place - measuring through the spokes), as it seems to pull the dropouts together slightly when I tighten the skewer up.
Does that mean that I can fit a new 9 speed hub in there?Kona Dawg Deluxe ('07)

should not be an issue."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
