My housemate has decided to get into a litlle light mountain biking.... Thing is she used to think any type of bike was a waste of time so she went a p**s poor LBS who has recommended a cheap full sussie a probike i think, Can anyone recommend a good beginners bike for a 5'2 woman who only wants to spend £200.

I've told her she'd be better off not buyin the cheapo bike and said a specialized Myka or something similar, So if anyone has any suggestions for a decent bike please help!!

I'd try and get a decathlon bike for that money... obviously *stay away* from full sus at that sort of price.

Decathlon bikes are exclusive to those Decathlon sports warehouse shops.

I've only seen them in France, but I'm sure google can tell you where your nearest one is.

    Also look at...

    GT Aggressor
    Gary Fisher Marlin
    Mongoose Tyax series

There's still a lot of 2007 bikes to be had discounted out there, which will bring some of those down to around £200.

Others may disagree, but I'd tell her not to get hung up on buying a women's specific bike - many manufacturers just change the stem, bar-width and saddle - and you can help her do these things.

Don't get a full sus for that price, it'll weigh a tonne and she'll get fed up fast.

As said above an old model hardtail will be spot on

My missus is just under 5' 2", and finding a decent bike for her wasnt easy, please ensure she tries some for size first (dont buy on the net)

We finally went for a Carrera Kraken (Ladies) from Halfords - I think this was about £210. Its a hardtail with lockout front forks.

Perfect size and weight and ideal beginner mtb with some nice compontry with disc brakes and Kenda Nevegal tyres.

The main problem she will have is her height so do ensure she tries a few bikes for fit and feel.

The Carrera range has had some good reviews for the price bracket, and for the amount of (Very) light trail riding she does, this bike is perfect.

  • All I can say is thanks guys!!!

We've had a go on the Kraken and she's got a short ride coming up on the Giant Boulder, But before she makes a decision a friend is actually getting a Decathlon for his missus in the right size so we're gonna try that. Your advice has been invaluable so many thanks again and if anyone has anymore Ideas for a bike we're still willing to listen
