Looking for a wheel upgrade from the standard alex rimmed ones I have at the moment.
Are there any bargain/sale items out there or are the best to consider Askium/FulcrumR7/RS20 for max my £150 budget.
Need to be shimano 8 to 10 speed so they can be used on present bike and on new bike if required when I get one in future.
Still thinking!

There may be some discounted deals available, but your best time will be 'after the season' (when the temps start cooling off......of course, if your area is above 50°F year-round, then you'll have to watch the foreign ads)

Hi, i have been looking for wheels to replace my Shimano R500s. Have looked at the following selection in a local shop. So here is my opinion so far :

Fulcrum R7 - look strong, love the colours, hate the freehub (far too loud ! )

Aksium - Look strong and well made, just as heavy as my R500s, not keen on the rim graphics, slightly quieter freehub than the Fulcrums.

RS20 - Look strong and well made with quite funky hubs and straight pull bladed spokes, the black / red graphics look good to me, silent freehub ( bliss )

Shimano 105s - only seen these on the web, i guess these are an older model, look a bit plain with nipples at the hub end of the spokes, seem on a par with the others above.

I think for the price ( just over £100 in CRC or Activesport online ) the RS20s get my vote so i will give them a go.

    Good luck with your choice.

For £150 you can get Fulcrum racing 5s rather than 7s:

The Fulcrums are noisy (they would be, they're made by Campagnolo, who are famous for noisy freehubs), but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It forces you to keep pedalling if you don't want to hear it. The Racing 5s would be my choice.

Reynolds are notorious for breaking spokes. The Planet X A57 wheels won the C+ award last year. Just bought some and they are fantastic value. Like open pro/ultegra quality for £130. Bargain.
I'm only concerned with looking concerned

    what about Easton
you get a set for around £179.00 ?
also Bontrager Race I think can be had for around the £130.00 mark are they any good ?
    RS10 £76.00
    RS20 £103.00 whats the difference between the RS10 & RS20 ?
Pro lite Como £119.00 Julie's cycles look a bit different from all the usual stuff except how can a wheelset be that heavy? Front wheel 906 gms !!! over 2kgs for the pair ouch!

You will be disappointed if you do pick a heavy wheelset as i am finding out now doh!

The RS20 is significantly better than the RS10s if the reviews I have read, including the C+ one, are anything to go by, the 10s don't seem to be worth buying.

I, and this is a personal opinion you understand, would never plump for a pair of Bontrager wheels because I did have a pair, and i also had a friend who had a different pair, and I have t say I have never ridden a thin and flexy wheelset in my life. Dreadful things.

For my money it would be the RS20s.

wow lucky you told me about the Bontragers  I was just about to buy a used set  I weigh 17 stone gulp!
I must admit the rim profile did look awfully thin compared to all the other rims. Thanks for the `heads up'
I've read similar comments about the cheap shimano tiagra and sora wheelsets the R500 sell for £50.00 a set but are probably only suitable for light riders
re the R10's and R20's they are so close together price-wise its difficult to see why anyone would not get the R20's

I have tried the Aksiums but found them heavy and a bit flexy. Currently use Fulcrum 7 and Krysium Elite (different bikes). The Fulcrums have been great , two years on rough roads with steep climbs but remained true. The Elites don't feel any faster/lighter or stiffer despite being more expensive. Forget the freewheel noise - it gives audible warning to pedestrians! Only snag with the Fulcrums (and I am told all Campag wheels) is that some tyres can be very tight fitting.
