Why does hoy cycle 7 hours on the road everyday?

In GTs interview with Chris Hoy by the track he stated he cycled 7 hours on the road everyday. Does he need to cycle that many hours on the road everyday? I take it long road cycles dont cause a decrease in the sprint performance of the likes of Cavendish otherwise he wouldnt be riding the tour. But surely its not beneficial to it hence why I'm confused Hoy does so much.

Another question I have is how fast do the sprinters get up the mountains in comparison to the climbers. Does anyone have any times from the Alpe dhuez time trial that Lance won? I seem to remember Hoy doing the Etape not too far in front of the broom wagon last year, but then again he is purely a sprinter.

Sorry if this is a obvious.

Cavendish is not a track sprinter like Hoy, the two types of sprinting are a bit different. Cav would get absolutely trounced by Hoy in a track sprint.

He's riding the Tour because the stage wins are probably worth more (prestige, cash and career) than an Olympic gold is, but I reckon he might just add a gold to his palmares aswell.

I think him saying he did 7hours a day on the road was a joke! He probably does close to 7 hours though but most likely sprint efforts and weights in the gym :)
  • Couldn't see Hoy doing that kind of training, 7 hours road work. He would soon not be the 200lbs stprinter he is?

Like jim says it'll be sprint training and weight training he could spend up towards 7 hours a day? :D

He said 7 hrs on the road a day and 8 at weekends

His tongue was fuirmley in cheek - It was definately a joke.

I doubt he even does 5 hrs training on an average day and it will almost all be indoors.

I thought it may have been tongue in cheek but he can keep a straight face!

What about the sprinters times up the climbs like alpe dhuez? Anyone have any ideas? I'm guessing Cav or Mcewan would still go up there in 50mins ish. total guess mind

Hoy did the 2006 Etape in about 6.5-7 hours IIRC, a long long way from the broom wagon. Did it along with Rob Hayles and Brailsford.
