Even though I am fiitting a tiagra chainset (9spd) to my winter bike the sti's are 06 sora so i will also be fitting an 8spd chain & cassette but at the moment i am having trouble finding the latter 2 items to similar spec.
Anybody got any reccomendations for an 8 spd chain & cassette please and where they are available from? ( i usually use shimano and would like to continue doing so if possible)

Don't bother with Shimano chains, get a KMC chain, all of the major online retailers have KMC chains.

I've got SRAM cassettes for my 8 speed wheels, but it doesn;t really matter between SRAM and Shimano here, just get the one with the right ratios from your chosen retailer.

Any bike shop that stocks shimano will help you, if they haven't got in stock, they can order it in... but there's loads of bikes still running around with 8 speed, should be no problem at all.

I replaced my 8 speed cassette and chain a while ago on my spare Shimano bike and it was a Shimano HG50 8 speed cassette and an SRAM PC870 chain which has been great i have to say.

Winter bike. Just get the cheapest you can find, keep a check for wear and replace as soon as any wear is detectable. I always kep an 8 speed sram split link in my bag but I've never needed it.

SRAM 8sp & 9sp cassettes seem better than the equivalently priced Shimano cassettes - much lighter, better finished.

And SRAM or KMC chains definitely : Shimano joining pin, oh noooo !

Ribble have some HG 8 speed cassettes for around £9.00

re chains I just fitted a 10 speed tonight for the first time and I have to say that the one fixing link on the chain didn't exactly inspire any confidence. Can you fit a different reusable link to a shimano chain ? What is the link called which doesn't require a chain tool and what chain can you use it with ?

KMC - with Missing link - strong, reliable, easy to fit, no fuss.

mmmmm, 8 speed; I love 8 speed. On my cross bike I use both Shimano HG50 and SRAM PG830 cassettes - happy with both. However, when it comes to chains, I do rate Connex Wipperman. Haven't tried KMC chains but will give them ago next, probably on my MTB.

KMC make shimanos chains so I would imagine there isnt much difference between them I couldnt say for certain because I use wipperman chains
