Rain & disc brakes

I recently upgraded from V's to discs on my Rockhopper and got caught out in a downpour on the way home form work a couple of nights ago.
It was bloomin' torrential and as it's only a half hour ride home I just got on with it.
About half way home - on the riverbank - the discs started making some horrendous grinding noises  Even after plodding through some serious puddles in an attempt to "wash out" whatever was causing the noise, I had to hose the brakes out before putting the bike away for the night.
My point is, do disc brakes always do this when it's wet, or did I just happen to pick up some rubbish in the caliper ?

just grit I think, should clear pretty quickly.
I often get this after going through a load of mud.Giant TCR advanced 2 (Summer/race)

Yes its just grit.
The holes in your discs should clear this after a couple of stops.
Be careful when spraying water directly at the caliper. Might be better to remove the wheel and running a rag inbetween the pads to remove any stubborn debris.0 -
It's quite normal, same thing happened to me tonight. In fact it tended to happen after riding through the puddles. It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.
I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result0 -
Yeah nothing wrong with your brakes at all, although it is an annoying noise .

Ok folks, thanks for that.
I reckoned that was the case but just wasn't sure they should be so noisy.2008 Rockhopper
