I have an old specialized allez with Sora brake calipers.

I will be commutuing 28 miles a days with half through the city centre.

Would upgrading my brake calipers be a good idea? such as dura ace or Ultegra?

Would they help me stop that little bit quicker?

Or does anybody have any other ideas?

IMHO for a commute the upgrade would be overkill. New brake blocks and cables and make sure they are correctly adjusted would probably get you to 90% of the performance from a set of ultegras.

Having said that I have DA calipers on my commute bike (GET ME) so if you fancy it what the hell.

What the other guy said. Plus gripper tyres have a big effect - better rubber, perhaps a little wider than you'd run for a race, like 28mm Sports Contacts. And most people don't know how to use their front brake aggressively enough; read www.sheldonbrown.com/brakturn.html
