I've bought a 50/34 RH700 compact and BB to replace a 52/39 chainset.

Will I have to shorten the chain when I swap them over? (so I can get some shimano pins before I start if needed)

You'll need to take one full link out (assuming you're chain's the right length to start with!).
Carlsberg don't make cycle clothing, but if they did it would probably still not be as good as Assos

"Need" is pushing it a bit - it will almost certainly still work OK without touching your chain.

I agree - unless it was borderline too long to start with, it will probably not be necessary. Having said that if you are running Shimano chains it would be a good idea to get a spare pin or two anyway as you never know when you might need one.

The main adjustment will be to the front derraileur. Assuming you haven't bought a new compact-specific one, the old one will have to be moved down and the cable adjusted to suit.
I\'m sure I had one of those here somewhere
