08 XT shifter problem

Had my bike for 9 months and have had trouble free shifting. However after the weekend ride clean up, whilst checking rear shifter indexing i came across a problem.

The indexing will shift/ click for the first 3 upshifts but doesn`t reset itself, so on the next the shifter doesn`t engage with the cable leading to ghost shifts. If i leave it a few seconds, or push the upshifter back toward my stem it resets and is ready for the next 3 shifts.

I`ve tried loosening the cable off and spraying some spray lube up there but it doesn`t seem to have worked.

Cheers Phil :(

strip and clean the cables and re set the tension. which way is it having problems in the direction the cable spring works or the direction the cable pulls?

    Cheers Nick

It won`t pull the cable on the second fire. So, non rapid rise, change up from bottom to third from bottom ok. Reset position of shifter, try to shift up again, there is no friction, like the shifter isn`t catching the cable.

in that case it could be farked or you have some dirt in it.

Just unhook the cable outers from their bosses by putting the chain on the big rear cog and then clicking the trigger several times as if moving the chain onto the smallest cog (but don't spin the pedals).

This loosens the cable enough so as to be able to unhook the outers. Now slide the outers back and forth and clean off any gunk with a cloth.

If the trigger shifter itself isn't working you can test this by loosening off the cable as described then hold directly onto the inner cable with tension where it exits the trigger whilst operating the shifter.

If it isn't working you will feel it either not releasing or not pulling.

TBH remove the cable and blow some GT85 through it.

Shifters aren't genrally difficult to strip, more a case of taking the plastic covers off and cleaning everything with a tooth brush and degreaser. Dry, regrease and reassemble. Don't try taking the main mechanism apart though and be careful not to lose the small screws that hold the case together.
It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

    I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
    Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result

    Cheers Stumpy,

I`ve decided to take the shifter back to Merlin. I think if i strip it down it may invalidate the warranty. Have sprayed some lube in but it seems to have got worse. So, off to Merlin Mon morning.

    Thanks for the replies

Well, as you put it Nick, the shifter was farked, the ratchet wasn`t working properley.

So, the nice fellows at Merlin fitted me a brand new shifter and a new cable under warranty. :D

    Cheers Phil
