Changing small ring on Ultegra double crankset

I've had a read around and found conflicting opinions on what is best to solve my problem. Hopefully this thread will resolve it
Coming from a road bike with a triple front to a Giant TCR C2 (2007) with a 39/52 Ultegra c/set, I am finding myself needing a lower gear for hills. (I am unfit and have a few health issues which prevents me from all out effort)
Can the 39 tooth ring be replaced with something smaller, without having to change half the drivetrain?
I could put a larger spread block on the back, but the rear derailleur has a very short cage and I don't know if it would cope.
Opinions are welcome, bike details can be found below if it is of any help.

If you've got a standard Ultegra double chainset, the smallest ring it will take I think is a 38 due to the Bolt Circle Diameter being 130mm.
To go smaller you will need to buy a new compact chainset - I've just got a 105 compact for £70 from Parkers and the quality is equal to the Ultegra IMO. The BCD on these is 110mm I think so the chainrings are not compatible with the standard double rings.
You can then just swap them over, adjust the front mech position and bingo, you have lower gears. You may need to shorten the chain as well depending on how much slack it has already.0
