Cancellara picked Schumacher as a potential rival prior to the TT:
"Fabian Cancellara is the heavy favorite for victory in Tuesday’s 29.5km time trial. The two-time reigning world time trial only sees one man as a rival.
“The Scottish,” said Cancellara said, referring to David Millar, not the Brave Heart hordes. “Millar is very strong right now. Who else? Name one? Maybe Schumacher on a short course. Evans will be good, but I usually can beat him.”"

So what do you make of the incident in the Giro?
Or do you prefer to suspend critical faculties?
Are you pat mcqaid?Dan0 -
Tony Gibb picked Schumacher as one to watch before the stage started,as it was a rolling course.0

If Schumacher had never won a time trial before then I'd be suspicious but he has a track record on medium distance tts so whilst it may have been a surprise it wasn't without precedent.
It's just tedious that some people seem to only want to infer that everyone is doping. I've no idea if Schumacher is clean or not but he is a class act and has been for some time.0 -
Watch out for Robbie Mac today - if the teams don't get organised and he doesn't get the win, he'll be eating babies alive after the stage - its all pain for him from Stage 6...Spring!

If he gains a bunch of time on the mountains every day this year, then perhaps ask some questions. But when a good rider putting in a good ride (with the best weather conditions that day) forces you to ask annoying questions, then it's time for you to leave the sport. You live and learn. At any rate, you live0
-
It's a bit annoying that whenever someone pulls on the yellow jersey the first thing anyone does is to rake into possible doping. But I guess that's cycling's fault for letting it get to that stage.
It does seem a bit bizarre that they found amphetamines. I mean, if you can afford cocaine you don't take speed.Scottish and British...and a bit French0 -

He was caught with amphetamine in his system..................
Out of competition by the police.
Amphetamine out of competition does not violate any doping rules. Tis the same as Mr Boonen's gak positive.
That said there's always been a whiff about thim. But if Chinny thought he could win the TT then he must be good.Fckin' Quintana … that creep can roll, man.0 -
the "incident at the Giro" is, I think, what flattythehurdler was referring to at the start of the thread.
Gerolsteiner rider Andrea Moletta's dad was detained with LOTS of viagra in his car and his son was withdrawn from the race. (see e.g. http://www.cyclingnews.com/news.php?id= ... /may23news)
We don't need to suspend out critical faculties to deny there's a link though. If viagra is for altitude, then it's not exactly the drug of choice for a flatlands TT is it?0 -

Hi there.
Ok, so it's obvious that Schumacher has a history... but as I said with Boonen, if he's not suspended or under investigation then he should be free to ride.
Trial by media tittle-tattle can quickly become a witch hunt, and an inconsistent one at that.
How come Ned Boulting didn't stick his microphone in front of Valverde last Saturday and ask him some pointed questions? How come we didn't get a recap of the Puerto case "just because they thought we should know"?
Don't get me wrong, I think Valverde and Schumacher should both be in the race, it's just the inconsistent media reporting I don't like.
Cheers, Andy0 -
Now if it had been a CSC , slipstream, highroad of fdesj rider, I would have happily accepted the result. We know that a few weeks ago, gerolsteiner riders were still cheating, hence my instant suspicion, His margin of victory was considerable.Dan0

Valverde did face questioning about Puerto on Saturday. Perhaps not on ITV but in the press conference he did.
The problem with this stuff is I've seen loads of articles in the normal press sayign things like "Tour leader tested positive last year" etc etc. So perhaps ASO were on the money excluding Boonen - Although Schumachers situation is much the same.Fckin' Quintana … that creep can roll, man.0 -
Four words: Willing suspension of disbelief. Until it's proved beyond doubt it's a clean win in my book. I SOOOO want to enjoy the Tour for its own sake this year.0

Dont you think that just maybe the fact that the TT was half the distance of a normal time trial would of made some difference
If it had been your ususal 50+ ks I dont think we would of had the same results0 -

For me, probably, for the rest of you, probably not.Dan0

Here here, it's a getting a bit repetative flatty, with respect I think you're happy looking for dopers rather than good rides.Planet X N2A

Oh come on! Just because a guy who's rumored to have a dodgy doc, who happens to like party-candy and rides for a team in a last-possible-ditch effort to secure a sponsor (which means he's in a last-ditch effort to up the offers from other teams) and has a teammate who's in hot water after his pop got caught with a bootload of Viagra, wins a TT and causes a slight surprise, you suspect him of doping?
Why would you ever think that?
Seriously, though, it wasn't that much of a surprise to see him win, after all. He got picked by two guys in our local pool for that stage. It was more of a surprise to me to see him crumble in the first part of the year. You'll always be able to imply that a rider is dodgy, as there are rarely more than two degrees of separation between any rider and some kind of scandal.
Schumacher is easy not to like, isn't he? He has one of those faces...0 -
I've put this in on another thread. If you remember the UCI said they had a list of 23 riders with results that were a bit strange so I would think that maybe Schumacher is on that and has probably had a lot of extra tests. Just my opinion!'Google can bring back a hundred thousand answers. A librarian can bring you back the right one.'

Apparently watermelon contains the same stimulant and 6 watermelon slices can have the same effect as one viagra tablet. The article I read didn't say how big a slice, but I've seen many Italians (and Turks) easily down 1/3 large watermelon in one session.0 -
The thing is that some people will have focussed on the first TT knowing that the winner could take the yellow jersey. The main GC hopes will be looking to peak either all the way through or in the mountain stages. People who are unlikely to place well in the overall but can time-trial well and climb well enough to stay with the leaders on the first two stages may well have tried to peak for this TT. Therefore people like Millar, Schumacher and Van de Velde would do better than would have been expected if everyone was planning to do well in this TT.0

This morning, by pure coincidence, my local newspaper has an article on the use of Viagra in sport, having spoken to a couple of amateur 10K runners who have used it. The men claim that taking V not too long before a race, they can keep up a 5K pace for the whole 10K.
The article goes on to then re-iterate some of what is said in the link from avoidingmyphd (like studies appearing to show V does improve performance, particularly at altitude). It also mentions that WADA are now considering including V on the banned list before the Olympics.
Apparently LA knew of it before his 7th victory ...

Ooh, can they keep it up longer, sir? Over a greater length, sir? Something other than their head crossing the line first at the photo-finish, sir? Ooh, suit you!

Sorry. Couldn't resist it.

Hee Hee.
We had a couple of students from the local college testing us in the running club last year, with caffeine pills and placebos.
We had to run our track session with nothing one week, with a pill the next, the times were compared.
Predictably, we almost all went quicker the following week, including those on placebos.
Now if we could get them to come back this week with the little blue pills...0
