Favourite commuting kit?

Whats your favourite bit of commuting kit and why? What would you rave about to other commuters?

What would you have made specially?

Favourite kit
I guess that should exclude the obvious stuff like SPDs (which I can't now ride without) and standard kit, but include stuff if a bit different or exceptionally functional.

My most recent purchase was a set of Ay-ups. My god they are brilliant, so light and robust feeling and so bright, no more fear of wheel and face killing potholes in the few unlit sydney streets for me. I don’t have any previous experience of proper mountain bike recharchable lights but there are plenty of rave reviews, they are half the price and much brighter than the ones I looked at in LBS.

I guess second on the list would be my Arkel tailrider rack top bag, standard kit I know but the only bag I could find that looked a bit different, I love it, very functional and have had people ask me about it, quite eye catching in red.

Ron hill gillet, cheap, easy to stuff into a bag and great in the rain, yeah your arms get wet but that stops the rest of you getting soaked with sweat, even back in the UK I hardly ever used a full waterproof as they just get so sweaty.

Custom stuff
On the custom made front I would like a cordura pouch that velcro straps to the cross bar and seat stay that is just large enough to slot a london A-Z or Syndey Gregories in, for quick and easy map checking if going on an unfamiliar route and avoiding craning round to get them/it out of pannier/rack bag.

Vest with LED design on back that could be operated on the go, say thumbs up for "cheers mate" and thumbs down for "t*sser", silly maybe but novelty value would be funny.

Spiderman jersey, oh yes, searched around having seen speed skate skin suits in spiderman design and thought cycling top/shorts would be funny/attention grabbing, if people are going to shout at me and call me a t0sser then I'd like to give them a reason, plus I think it would be hilarious. Maybe a whole range of superhero ones, only those without capes though of course.

Oh dear, have I just admitted to something dubious there...?

Maybe you should suggest it to Foska. They don't do them but it looks like the sort of thing that they might consider...

P.S. I second the Ay-Ups; an incredible upgrade over my old 2x10W halogens with a sealed Lead-Acid battery

    Yes

(so says the man who's contemplating a London Pride jersey...or maybe ESB...)

I'd like a replica football kit cycling jersey. 2 birds, one stone...

It's just a hill. Get over it.

    1. dynohub and B+M lights - totally reliable, never need to change batteries, don't need to unclip anything when you lock your bike up, bright enough for unlit roads.

    2. ortlieb office bag panier - waterproof, big enough for everything, clips on and off the rack one handed, looks OK being dragged into the office

    3. (can't remember the brand) locking wheel and seat post skewers - small things but means that you can secure your bike with one d lock and saves faffing with cables/second lock/removing wheels/etc

    4. montane velo jacket - water repellant, windproof, VERY breathable, cheapish, packs into a little bag the size of a small apple

    5. rapha fixed shorts - pure understated quality

Sound good - anyone know who makes them?

It's just a hill. Get over it.
