    certainly
  • LOL glad I'm not the only one who noticed "Certaintly" and "Majorly".
Last year I watched some Giro stages via T'interweb, and Kelly turned up on Italian TV speaking Italian, and still sounding just as boring. Eurosport need "Duffers" back, he may have made some major gaffs, but at least they were interesting major gaffs.

Duffers should be put out to grass permanently. If you listen to what Kelly says, he's usually spot on with his assessment of the race. I think the Eurosport team of David Harmon, Sean Kelly and Emma Davies is pretty good this year. Emma Davies lightens the mood and her gentle teasing of the other two is quite entertaining.

Agreed. While Duffers knowledge is good its often wasted by sheer babble.
Sean Kelly has experience second to none and is definitely better than a couple of years back. Harmon says that he comes out with so much stuff off-air that is great information, but it doesn't come over once the mike is switched in.
Its a good team tho' - commenting for 3hrs+ and generally keeping the viewer informed and entertained over 3 weeks cannot be easy.
As long as Harmon doesn't go down the Duffers route of starting a thread then getting sidetracked and never finishing it..... :D

I have to admit to being one of the people to diss Sean and his monotone comentary, but i've noticed in this tour that he's lightened up a little and seems to be more conversive with Harmon. I like Harmon a lot now.

And yeah she is fit! No wonder she gets to chat with the riders!

I think Sean's great and he has a wicked sense of humour.Ive said this before on here but last years giro when he said the riders wanted a fur king drilling was very funny, and went un noticed because of his broad accent. His knowledge is 2nd to none and he can pick the riders before the rest of them.I remember when he was interviewed it was said he was the only rider to nod answers while on the radio

At one point the other day you could just hear "SH1TE!" coming from the background, and I could just see Kelly with his sandwich spilt down his front or something.

    Just me? OK.

P.S. Emma Davies is hilarious with her flirty digs at Harmon

    I thinks it's a good combo.

I'm a big fan of David Harmon as he really has a passion for the sport.

I only started riding & watching on TV a few years ago, and I remember his comments when the Liberty Seguros scandal hit at the Giro. You could tell he was gutted personally & for the sport itself, and said something along the lines of 'its like finding out the love of your life keeps cheating on you'. Good words indeed......

    Rgds

  • I'd rather listen to Harmon and Kelly than Sherwen and Liggett, and I'm a fan of Liggetts for nostalgiac reasons more than anything. Harmon is in a class of his own though.

For every time Kelly says Certaintly or Majorly, you can be sure that Paul Sherwen is coming out with a Well Phil to match it. Kelly's got a very dry and quite acerbic sense of humour, sometimes his silences can be just as telling as coming out with some innane comeback.
David Harmon and Kelly and emma Davies knock spots off Ligget and Sherwen. Those two are like Smashy and Nicey off the fast show in comparison (and I'm sure there was a bit of re-recording of Phil Liggets commentary on the highlights show the other day - the sound quality seemed to change as if they'd dropped something in).
Anyway, Phil Liggets nevre been as good as when he did Whiskey in the Jar and The Boys are back in town..

    +1

Emma Davies is a really good addition. Not sure about Carlton Kirby or Mike Smith though. They're both pretty pointless.

    :D
    Or "Parisian Walkways".
To be fair, Liggett and Sherwen's output is aimed at Joe Public, and not at enthusiasts, so it needs to be a little like "spoon feeding".
Hell it was watching the old Channel 4 coverage that got me interested in cycling, so can't be all bad.

Only one Emma picture in the thread? rubbish!!!

Agree on Harmon though. "In a class of his own" sums it up really.

Time for Liggett and Sherwen to go I am afraid.

David Harmon was doing the commentry in the start/finish at the Dragon this year, my wife got him to look after her bike while she went off for a massage. I was chatting to him later and he's a nice bloke.
  • Kelly, Harmon and Davies are class. All three of them know their stuff, and the dynamic between them is great. I love the way Emma Davies teases Sean Kelly, and Harmon, who does most of the talking, is rarely boring or pointless, like most sports commentators. The three of them do such a good job that you could almost follow the race without the visuals. Almost... ;)

There was a great moment today when Emma Davies was talking about how she got into a breakaway once and held off the field for entire race. Sean chipped in with, "well, of course from what I know of womens cycling, there are virtually no tactics whatsoever and all the riders ride as individuals..." Cue awkward silence and David Harmon swiftly changing the topic of conversation

I particularly enjoyed the discussion on how women take a "natural break", as I believe it is called, during races.

"It definately is easier for men" was the general consensus. Oh, how I laughed.

I must be in a minority of one but I find Emma Davies totally out of her depth - good that they've got a woman on the team but she can't be the best they could do.

I think that's a bit unfair - her inexperience as a pundit shows (as much in the timing of her comments as what she says), but think of Gary Lineker when he first started out - charming, enthusiastic and pretty decent if naive - compared to the sarcastic, banal, old-boys-club tosser he is now. I'm sure she'll rapidly grow in confidence and craft,

Kelly seems to have cut down on the 'certainlys' I think, and he does sound more natural and conversational now. I think the team of Harmon, Kelly and Emma is a good one and I'm really enjoying their output this year.

You may be right - though if she reads this she'll see I'm in a minority and no commentator is universally popular - I'm a Kelly fan but lots of people find him monosyllabic and dour - personally I find him really witty and enthusiastic. I think on the whole we are pretty well served.

Sean Kelly is a cycling God and knows as much about racing as anyone. Agreed, he is an acquired taste in a commentary team but I find him witty, spot on with his predictions & assessments and would hate to think he might cut down on the 'certainlys'.

I'm a fan of liggett, more for his knowledge. He's the motty of cycling, but recently i'm getting more peeved by his 'head in the sand' views on doping, and Sherwin repeating the same lines he has done for the past few years!! Annoying!!

I mean i know they think that because of new viewers they have to do the layman terms for everything, but come on, the majority of viewers have been watching for years.
