high level rear mount bike rack - bmw 1 series
hi i'm after getting a rear mount rack so i can take my steed on hol (please don't tell mrs peasoup).
I don't have towbar etc. so i would like to get hold of a high level rear mount rack (to carry 2 bikes) that doesn't obstruct lights or no. plate on bmw 1 series 5 dr.
can anyone recommend one?

I'm looking right now for a similar device for a Honda Accord 05. Try the Saris site, which will show you which ones are compatibel with different makes of car, though i dont think any of them are high level.
I'm going to Halfords this eve to check out their "advanced high level rack" but am dubious about hanging £1500 worth of carbon fibre on a camping stool contraption held on by a couple of flapping straps.....0 -
Take a look at roofbox.co.uk has some sueful tips on choosing one, and a decent car compatibility section. I've just gone for an Atera roof system from them.0

try aveniar racks on raleighs webb site they are pre built light and fold flat when not in use about £80. most shop should show how it fits before you buy0

Hi, ta for replies.
The avenir looks promising as does one i've tracked down - mont blanc easygrip s2. both these seem likely to lift bike high enough to clear lamp clusters (which are quite high on the 1 series). i have tracked local stockists of both of these so will have a mooch around at weekend.
my biggest problem is that the car is company one and its lease is up soon, so i'm loathe to spend too much on something dedicated to that one vehicle or to make costly mods, like wiring in light board.
i had a look at saris stuff, which certainly looks good. the RS looks the best bet for my application but I'm not sure it would lift bikes clear of lamps.0 -
just for info...
finally got Mont Blanc Easygrip s2.
2 bike rear mounted rack that lifts the bikes high enough to clear lamps and no plate on the beemer.
pricey at £100 but cheaper than combined cost of other options.0 -
Be aware that hi mounts put the bike side on into the airflow which absolutely cripples fuel consumption if going on a long motorway journey. Not such a prob if only doing local slower roads tho.0
