Cycle hire in Italy

Hi All,
I am off to Italy in a few weeks and will be spendind most of my time travelling round the far north (Milan - Como - Verona (ish)). I was thinking of trying to hire a Road bike for a day or two to try and get some miles in. My question is, how easy is this to do? Do plenty of bike shops hire out? Do I need to take my own shoes or will I have to use flat peddles? Is there anything else I should know?
Thanks in advance.
