Giant SCR Bottom Bracket - Upgrade

I am in the process of upgrading the cartridge BB on my SCR2, I know the topic of Facing has been covered re.Hollowtech II quite a lot, but my question is,

Does the SCR frame specifically, need facing?

I ask this as looking at the frame it's all looking like machined bare metal, leading me to think it may have been prepped in the same way as the identical frames that made up the higher models with outboard bearings?

Anyone riding an SCR who has upgraded care to contribute from experience?

Thanks in advance and appologies for covering old ground.

All i will say is that if it has not had an external bearing bb fitted then it should be faced.

i was "helping" build up a Roubaix SL frame ( I was the weight behind the frame while it was being faced), Brand new out of the box and it was £1400 frameset.

    Hi, i have a different view :)
I have fitted Hollowtech bearing cups to two frames and have not found it necessary to have the BB faced. I would remove any paint from the outer surfaces if they were not bare metal though.
Just screw the cups into the BB by hand and check that they sit nicely on the BB faces, then tighten a little more with the tool.
The axle should slide nicely through both bearings if they are aligned ok.

  • thanks for these responses nicklouse and topdude, good to get 2 different opinions.

Can anyone out there throw in what they did/happened with their SCR when they switched to Hollowtech?

    Thanks Again :)
