Heavy rider rear wheel for touring
Just a quick question.
I'm looking to upgrading my bike, bit by bit of course, to do some real camping tours. I have had some advice on how to do it, but I was really looking now towards a strong rear wheel. I am about 20 stone and was looking maybe to some towpath riding as well as roads so I am pretty sure I would need a strong wheel (after breaking a few spokes lately I'm more convinced then ever).
So I was looking at some advice on good wheels for strength and longevity? I might not have the highest budget in the world, but all advise is greatfully recieved.

Mavic A719 or A319 rim with an XT hub built up with DT spokes. Not exactly light, but very, very strong.More problems but still living....0

Good choice. If you could go up to 40 spokes that would help too. I know a guy who uses a tandem rear wheel when camping.plus je vois les hommes, plus j'admire les chiens

The quality of the wheelbuilding is particulally relavent. Anyone in your area who builds tandem wheels would be a good start. 40hole hubs may only be available in the wider tandem widths of 140mm & 145mm. 48hols are also popular for tandems but 48h rims are very hard to find.
Also a fat, high quality tyre will help carry a heavy load. Schwalbe give load ratings for their tyres on their website.
