According to Cyclingnews the wind has dropped off.

Could be on for Millar if he keeps his nerve.

Schumacher smashes the chin. No-one expected that, eh?

Of course I based my PTP pick of Millar yesterday on detailed 24hr meterological forecasts of the Cholet micro climate. Ahem.

Stefan Schumacher 33 seconds faster than Chinny? Bloody extra-terrestrial!

    Not me, I admit.

    From BBC sport
1540: Things are really hotting up now as the leaders prepare to join the rest of the field. Cadel Evans, clad in pinky/black of the Silence-Lotto team pedals out for his turn.

    pinky/black - I love it !

So Millar is at 1.46 overall, Schumi is at 1.52 overall. Millar 13 seconds slower at checkpoint 1.

Gonna be tight for the jersey.

Is that an aerial on the back of Millers helmet?

Yes, the team radio is in-built to the helmet.

Oof, Valverde 48 seconds down at 11km.

    Kirchen's ride is good too.

    Schumacher's is astonishing.

Evans 2nd fastest at the finish. Valverde not going well at all. Frank Schleck also lost a sackload of time. Not that he was ever going to challenge for GC...

    Now Millar takes 2nd.

    Almost Millar time.

Schumacher's ride is a genuine surprise. At this rate, he'll be in yellow with a lead over Kirchen.

Kirchen and Millar 1:46 down on Yellow, Schumi 1:52 ?

And Kirchen down 0:11 and Millar down 0:15 on Schumi at 19.5k

    Ooooh !

I think David Harmon has just choked to death live on air. A sad day for broadcasting.

Kirchen 18" down on Schumi. A Mekon in yellow! That's gotta be a first for the TDF.

Note: Harmon is still alive. King Kelly did the Heimlich manouevre.

Schumi will probably go on the tear tonight and get busted by the cops again.

    Valverde well off then.

It amazes me how excited everyone was over Piti's Dauphine TT when it was nowhere near flat.

Where did Schumacher and Kirchen pull those rides out of? Surely, they've peaked for the first week stages?

I would be quietly pleased (at least with the results if nothing else  ) if I was Evans.

Kirchen could be a serious contender for the green jersey now. He's on 81, Hushovd on 64. Kirchen could score quite a bit in the medium and high mountains...

Schumacher was clearly riding very well but looking again at his riding, the police outrider in front of him is not that far ahead. Voigt had the same. OK, they were not drafting right behind but I think this could have been worth several seconds.

Ricco is now over 4 minutes down. Can he still be conisdered a serious contender now?

I thought so - he had a good Giro and with the shortage of time trials in this Tour I thought he might be there or thereabouts.

Schumacher is eyebrow raising. And he'll be hard to shift over the next few days I suspect.

First ITT of 2007 TdF : Vino
First ITT of 2006 TdF : Honchar

Must've been a double dose of Calpol or something today. :P

It was a surprise, sure, but he has won TTs before. Last year he beat Kloden (and Kirchen in 3rd, funnily enough) in the Tirreno-Adriatico TT, and he's won a bunch of others too.

But on the other hand, he did fail a dope test when he was riding for Shimano-Memorycorp, so who knows.
