I just got back from Coed Y Brenin and Llandegla. My first time in Wales on the MTB.

    It was great.

We did the Tarw and the Temitwr at Coed Brenin. A lot of climbing and the downhills are very rocky. We were all riding hard tails and I reckon if you had a full suss bike, and knew how to ride it properly, you may have got even more out of it than us. It was great. The bloke in the bike shop was a bit of a tosser though..

Llandegla - was better, for me anyway. It's about a 40 min drive from Coed. We did the Red Run, bits of the Black and then the Blue (we were knackerd). Not anything like as rocky as Coed. Our hardtails were fine. An easier ride. And for us faster and more 'swooping' than Coed. I enjoyed Llandegla a tad more. The Red was great; fast trails. The climb at the start was more varied. All the sections flowed together nicely. It was busy on Sunday morning though; best maybe to wait till after lunch.

    Cool Thanks,
most of us will be riding hardtails. So i guess for the type of tyre it would be something like the Kenda Nevegal DTC / Panarace Cinder as its quite rocky type up there?

    Thanks

I was advised to get a new Panracer Xcpro... I only sought the advice cos the tyres i had on are the ones supplied with the bike (specialised rockhopper) and i'd worn them down a bit.

i rode with the panracers and had no punctures. at coed the rocks are hard.. and your tyres take a more than a bit of a battering. before going i posted a question on here asking for advice on the best tyres and didnt really get a response.

Ricko, yourNevegal/Cinder combo will be fine.

2.1s are OK if that's what you've got, but if you have a wider front tyre - stick that on.

Well im going to have to get a new pair of tyres for my hardtail so if someone could point me in the right direction thats would be great, width/make?

I've been to Cody twice now, Last November and May just gone, both times I used Panaracer fire XC pro 2.1's and they were more than fine in the wet or dry.

Out of the rides MBR is probably the best, the Beast is also good if your feeling very fit. Temtiwr was a good quick one the afternoon we got there and the Tarw was good in places but....

Ricko - Just get whatever all-round tyres you fancy next anyway - they'll be fine for CyB.

Kenda Nevegals, Panaracer Cinders, Continental Mountain Kings, Maxxis High Rollers, Schwalbe Nobby Nics are all p[opular choices - some are lighter/beefier than others.

Personally I'm used Conti Mountain Kings last time I was there and they were perfect for the trails.

Just spent the weekend there, awesome place and my first trip to CYB. Agreed, it is very rocky and there is also quite a lot of fireroad on the trails...my Bontrager Jones which I find rubbish in mud were actually fine.

If you have not ridden rocks before it will do wonders for your riding...the first time I did Badger (Sat AM) I must have dabbed 15 times, the second time (Sun PM) I cleared it from the "forks" to the next fireroad, well chuffed.

Be prepared for a few "offs"...taking a spare mech hanger would not be a bad idea and I did wear elbow pads too which I was very glad of twice. You don't exactly look cool but I did not want to drive all that way to hurt myself and lose a day's riding which unfortunatly happened to a mate at Afan.

I really recommend Pink Heifer, , Badger, Dreamtime, Rocky Horror Show, and I also loved the very rocky Pins and Needles but full suss really helped there!
  • ive been to both coed y brenin and llandegla tonnes of times and i have to say for excitemnet id choose llandegla,
but both are very easy on the bike itself dont worry too much about tires and suss and that, my bike is completly basic and nothing ever really goes wrong out there
    have fun

I've just done llandegla this weekend.

As most have alreday said: a min 2.1" trye is essential, i ride michelin comp lights.

The tame jump section that start from the bridge about 2/3 of the way through the trail is a definate highlight !!
