Old Centre Pull Cantilever Brake Upgrade

I have an old mountain bike that though cheap, has been a reliable work horse for many years. I am loathed to part with it (though doubt I could even give it away!) so would like to upgrade a few of the components, starting with the brakes.
It has old centre pull cantilever brakes which I would like to replace along with the levers.
I would appreciate some advice on options:
1. Can I replace them with V-brakes - are the frame braze-ons a standard size and will therefore take standard i.e Deore V brakes?
2. Do I have to stick with the original type of cantilever - if so there doesn't seem to be much choice out there these days (apart from Avid Shorty)?
3. Any other options?

Also what are the pros/cons of each brake type?

Would appreciate any advice you can offer.

the mounts are in the same place.
So new V brakes and V brake compatible levers.

braze ons are the same and will work fine.

rear may be a problem if rhe frame has nowhere for the caable at the back (my old kona needed a tektro clamp for this.
