Some sites say 112 and others 116 and Shimano doesn't say at all in its tech doc.

Don't mind me asking but why do you need to know?

Just to work out chain length for a CS600 power meter. I know for most accuracy I have should remove the chain and weigh it and measure its length however I know a new chain weighs 280gm and can determine its length easily if I knew how many links it came with. The fact that links will have been removed is wholly unimportant as the weight of the chain will be reduced proportionately and therefore density will remain the same. Sorry if that was a little more than you wanted to know however I was trying to anticipate more questions coming back from yourself or others.

My HG CN-7801 bought in Spring 2007) says 114L on its box.

To double check, I'll count the installed links plus the remaining links (which I've kept) tomorrow for you (I'm going out right now).

Thanks that would be great. That would agree with what was suggested by someone else ie 114.

I would have thought you have to count them to be accurate. I mean - its only counting up to 116 or so - easy for someone who can use a power meter.

Did you install the chain yourself ? Do you just put the whole chain on rather than using the right length for your particular gear combination ?

Yep - confirmation! I have counted 108 links installed plus 6 left in the box, total 114 links on my HG CN-7801.

Why do some people instead of answering the question asked always try to make people look like stupid ass holes. The chain came with the bike therefore I don't know how many links were removed and yes thanks I can count to 114 or 116 or 112. As I have already stated it is the chain density which is important therefore removing links has no bearing on accuracy whatsoever. If I know a chain's weight out of the box and I know the number links in the original package then I can calculate the length of the chain. I knew the weight of the chain out of the box was 280gm however I couldn't verify how many links were included as this wasn't given definitively anywhere that I could find, including on Shimano's website. I used this forum in the manner in which it is supposed to be used ie I asked a question and thanks to Dales1 I now have an answer to my question. Now what is wrong with that.

Thanks Dales1 that's a great help. Saves me having to remove the chain and possibly weakening it. That was to be avoided if possible. Your effort is much appreciated.

If you'd got a KMC or Wippermann (or even SRAM) chain this wouldn't have been a problem, you could have just taken it off and put it back on without damaging it:wink:

And that's why I'll never use a Shimano or Campag chain again.

Yeah I agree totally with that but it is what came with the bike so I may as well use it until it needs replaced, which might not be that long if some reports about their longevity are to be believed. I will certainly be changing to something which is a little easier to fit / unfit as I would like to give the chain a good clean once in a while by removing which I can't really do at present though with only 2 rides on it still looks gleaming.
