Hi guys, currenty looking for new bike for around £250, willing to spend alittle more if really needed.
* Looking for a hardtail (no rear sus.)
* About 21-24 gears would be ideal but more important something that shifts nicely.
* Would like powerful v-brakes. I mean if I pull the front I am catapulted into the air (current bike wont fulfil that).
* Will be used mostly on roads and paths so wont benifit from monster truck wheels.
* Would like a pre-installed bashguard too. I notice some bikes not looking like them have them.
Looking at evanscycles.com, (there or anywhere else, but evans look good) there is quite a choice ... is it safe to assume anything from Specialized, Giant or GT is going to be decent?

I'll hand the choices over to you guys, any Q's throw 'em.
Thanks

A few mentioned that Evans sell in the What Bike thread.0

The Evans-own brand 2007 Pinnacle Peak 0.1 seems good value at £199.99 (down from £279). With the £50 (from your budget) saving you could get some accessories, or that bashguard you are after. Or even tyres more suited to your style of riding. To disagree with three-fourths of the British public is one of the first requisites of sanity - Oscar Wilde0

Right going for the GT Av. with disc brakes.0

Good choice, Mongoose has better fork though! Can you try them for size etc first?0

Went with medium, I'm sure that'll be fine as I was in the middle of the height and I usually ride medium, I think I can return and change size.
Gotta wait about 2-4 days for it to come now.
BTW how pre-assembled are these bikes usually?0 -
Usually: fit bar and stem, front wheels, pedals, seatpost, then full safety check and set up is needed.0

Fair enough, I'm sure it'll be fine, everybody rides a medium anyway.0

I'm in the middle of buying hell with something like this at the moment.. bike not set-up at all when it arrived.. bits of it faulty and I'm still trying to get it sorted (day 20 without the complete bike and counting)..
my advice is to ring them up and check all details like this before you buy from anyone online..0
