Another what bike thread

Hi
1st time post on this forum so thought I'd start by doing the usual 'what bike' thread
quick introduction..... I've been riding since 1988 when I bought a MS racing MTB which I ended up racing in the old NEMBA race series ( I used to be fit then, before I discovered beer & girls  ) Anyway I graduated quite quickly onto Cannondales, my 1st I bought in 1991.
Ever since then I have ridden Cannondales & currently have a 2004 Jekyll 900 upgraded with hope minis.
I am toying with the idea of replacing the Jekyll with a new bike & have automatically looked at Cannondales again, but I can't help thinking I might be missing out & would like opinions & recomendations of alterantives.
All my riding is old school stuff, eg out in the hills & I love single track. I also love to ride Glentress red & Dalby red. I don't do north shore or play parks. Toying with the idea of some fun downhilling in the Alps next year too.
So what would be the best bike upto say £2.5K ( I'm happy to upgrade components in the future ).
The alternative is to slightly upgrade my current bike, as it rides fantastically & apart from things starting to wear a bit, there is no 'performance' reason to change.
Thanks
James

At that price I don't think there are any bad bikes !!
Just test and take your pick !!
