After many years of not cycling, I'm off on a short cycling holiday. I have a Dawes Galaxy and need to put new tyres and a few other bits and pieces on it before going. As far as tyres are concerned, it's currently fitted with 28-630 Michelein, but they have no tread. In the hope of stopping punctures I'm planning on replacing them with Schwalbe Marathon. The closest size available is 32-630: will these be OK to fit? I also thought that I should replace the inner tubes, and these are available in 28-63- and 32-630. Assuming that 32-630 typres are suitable, I feel that I should also go with the 32-630 tubes, but am unsure whether this is correct: should I use the 28-630? Finally (!) some new rim tape appears to be the right thing to do whilst I'm at it. I can get this in 15mm and 18mm width. My inclination is to use the 18mm, but wonder whether the rims (27" x 1 1/8") should really use teh 15mm. Completely at a loss. Can people help? I'm planning on using all Schwalbe stuff. What's the best value place to buy on line.; Currently I'm looking at tyresatlast.com who do the bits at a decent price, but I know nothing about them.

630 wheels are more commonly known as 27". In my humble opinion, the best tyre available in this size these days is the Panaracer Pasela Tourguard. I'd go for 27x1 1/8 which will definitely fit in your mudguards. They're available from St John street Cycles (www.sjscycles.com) who will also stock the right tubes and have lots of spares for older bikes too. I'd give them a ring.

I've got one of the SMPs on my current 27" jobbies, it's excellent but like riding a tractor tyre, it's totally massive.

Am about to upgrade to 700c wheels and Conti Gatorskins 8)

May need to buy some deep drop calipers, tho'

It's just a hill. Get over it.
