Looking at doing a build up with a Ribble Audax Frame to make a sturdy serviceable long lasting bike. Does anybody running one of these know whether I can use downtube shifters instead of STI? Also, can you use 25mm tyres with mudguards on this?

Thanks

Van

I'm not sure, I'm not old enough to have ever used downtube shifters

Isn't that like asking if a sportscar can run drum brakes?

The Ribble frame has stops rather than bolt on bosses, as do most modern aluminium frames. I'm not sure if the profile of the downtube would allow the use of band on shifters.

They still get used, notably by Lance Armstrong for front shifting in the mountains.

My Ribble winter (purchased 06) has conventional bosses that will take DT shifters.

Might be worth giving Ribble a ring, they might vary from batch to batch as mine also bought 2006 didn't.
The photo on Ribble's website looks like it has bosses, but in the photo of redddraggons you can see it has stops.

Thanks for all the comments guys. Think I will give Ribble a call and check just to be sure.

reddraggon - i suspect i'm just a couple of years older than you so I haven't had much use of downtube shifters but I have been told they are very relaible and on long treks in back of beyond they are easier to fix and set up if you do have a problem.

Nuggs - I think your analogy would have been better if I was trying to stick them on a full carbon TT bike or similar rather than an audax/winter bike. but thanks for the comment.

I'll let you all know what happens, Ribble just seem to have a better deal than normal on them.

    Van.

Perhaps Ribble think only bearded nutters still want DT shifters?
