I currently have a 9 speed Veloce groupset with a standard 53/39 chainset but want to change to a compact. Will my existing front mech shift OK or do I need to change it to one of the CT versions?

should work without any problems. :)
Oh and please remember to click on my blog:

The more clicks I get the higher it creeps up the google radar :)

Alignment is a bit more critical, and upshifts aren't quite as sharp because a standard mech lacks the deeper inner cage plate - get the mech as close to clearing the big chainring as possible.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

Strange how this isn't a problem with Shimano. My old 105 mech handles the compact on my 'cross bike just fine.

I note that the new campag front mechs are now designed to handle both standard and compact chainset, btw.

I've got a brand new Campag Veloce UT compact 50/34 chainset for sale if you're in the market for one.

How much? and what size cranks?

Also, why are you selling it? Were you not very impressed with it?

170mm cranks. Bit cheaper than Ribble?

I bought a groupset but already have a chainset, so I have no real need for it. You'd need to get some cups though. Alternative is I fit it to my daughters bike prior to our attempt on Alpe d'Huez and Croix de Fer.
