I've just noticed this offer on Paddy Power (it was theit top feature):

I look forward to their offer of: If any Champions League or Premiership Footballer tests positive then we'll refund all football bets - there's less risk for them there

(Note - I like football).

A bet on Valv Piti looks tempting now though.

They also do bets on head-to-heads on each stage (which of two riders will come first), sometimes with riders unlikely to feature (e.g Millar v Carrara). If you wanted to rig betting without effecting the competition at all, it's right there for you. I may look into this market (legally). I reckon it could be a money spinner.

PS I have a bet on Bradley Wiggins to win Sports Personality of the Year at 40-1 - a bargain

I think Paddy Powers money is safe. The T&C show that this applies only to riders who are banned by ASO for a failed dope test. IIRC, ASO will convene a panel to assess each positive "A" sample and decide whether to bar a rider within 24 hours. It is almost impossible that "B" samples will be confirmed within that 24 hour window so ASO will probably exclude the rider on "unsporting behavior", "interference with ASO profit margin" or somesuch - declaring a riders as banned for doping before both tests have been carried out will see ASO / FFC up before CAS.

I created a site specifically for cycle betting - Boylesports had a great offer on, with you getting your money back on a any single bet on the GC if Cadel Evans wins the TDF. I believe it has expired now though, they also will give you your money back on any single bet on a stage winner every day if a French rider wins the stage...

    The bookies always win.

But you can make money if you're quick. On head to head bets, where you the bookie gives you a pair of riders and you pick which one will finish ahead of the other, eg McEwen vs Hushovd. If a split appears in the bunch, you can identify a rider ahead and one behind and then look for the head to head bet. For example, you could do this on Betfair today, where you could bet on Cunego vs. Sastre, as the bunch split on the finish, the Italian got caught out in by a split. But this means you're staring at the screen like a bond trader and having to bet big just to win small.

Still, you can also use sites like Betfair to bet against things happening. For example, you can still put money on Soler not winning the KOM, or not being in the top-3 by Paris. Given he's got a bad wrist and lost lots of time, it's quite possible. Of course the odds are always small. So I return to my opening statement!

  • Ladbrokes have Schleck (the better one, can't remember which) at 9-1. I quite fancy that to be honest.

Hmmmm... I'd like to give it another go this year. I didn't bet at all last year, as I figured my 50$ 30-1 win on Contador will be a hard one to beat.

Too bad online gambling is now illegal here...

Bookies aren't great on the cycling, or historically haven't been. Mate of mine got Landis at 70-1 and they paid out. Good bet would be to see if you can lay Armstrong off and then balance it off with another bookie. If you know what you're doing you should at least break even.
