  • The avenue in southampton. its the main route out of the city to the countryside and its always busy has loads of massive pot holes (got double pinch flats and dented rim once) and the 'cycle path' is the pavement and is thus covered in glass, crosses countless driveways and junctions and if you have the temerity to use the road you get honked at as your paseed by mere millimeteres by retards in vans and lorries (hilariously i once even got screamed at by a pedestrian to get on to the pavement  )

It's not an area as such, except perhaps in a metaphysical sense - the Piccadilly Line.

The cycle path that takes me the short route to work that I end up taking if I oversleep in the morning. It takes me past the Westlands helicopter factory and every morning I am confronted with people who show liltle or no cycling skills and quite frankly have a problem with the concept of keeping to the left of the cycling lane or at least not riding in the middle of it and wobbling about everywhere.

Last night on the way home one of them was daydreaming and not looking where they were going so I slowed down and moved out of there way as they wobbled into my path. My cry of "watch where you are going" was enough to make them wobble out of my way again.

How difficult is it to ride in a straight line and watch what other people are doing, its getting dangerous and I've got the point now where I have decided to cycle on the road and take my chance with the tin boxes.

Mold-Denbigh road...minging road surface and the whole stretch is like a wind tunnel

The A541?, It's not too bad, better than a lot of roads in England.

Ie, if you do it on a motorbike :)

    Near the bustops too!

My family (and some friends) are from Ockendon, lived there myself a while back.

We ride from the Treaclemine (near where I live), through davey Down and up into Marley woods, then out to Belhus (and back!). Not the most inspiring route, but about the best without using the car.

Do you have any local routes?

Wolverhampton :x what a dump - I hate the place, only been here for 41 years now :? Bonus is I am only 5 mins from Staffordshire, and 20 mins from Shropshire :D

Love Shropshire, love the damn place

Which bit of Wolverhampton are you in? Grew up there myself (still go back now and again, and am still all too easily parted from my cash when popping into Fred Williams :) ), and getting into the countryside for decent rides was always fairly easy. Not much in the way for difficult hills unless headed west to Bridgnorth or north over the Chase (the long slog uphill from Cannock town centre to the telecomms tower near Broadhurst Green was and is always a favourite), though.

    Harehills/Chapeltown area of Leeds.
Its full of chavs/refugees/illegals driving about in untaxed, uninsured cars. Most of them are held together with tape and string.

I hate The Avenue too. I just moved, and my way out of town is along Millbrook Road. It's a pleasure.

Go up to the swimming pool, then ride up alongside the golf driving range into the country park. You can do a good few miles if you don't mind weaving about a bit and crossing a few roads.

Yup, I live there as well!

east london yes ... birmingham, southampton, leicester ... etc. all sorry once great places that are now only exceptional in their fondness for roundabouts and crap architecture. Portsmoutth also ... the "city" that proudly announces itself to all arriving by train with a giant Matalan store.
