Just to let you all know that the recent fire in the Centre of Burgess Hill will not stop all the rides starting in the centre of the Town.

There's a nice new coating of tar & chippings on Yorks Hill – and swept clean of loose bits too. That means there's a much better grip now, so no wheel spin if climbing out the saddle and I managed to ride up it all the way on 39x23 for the first time ever as a result.

Thanks for the info Ricadus, that will be good news for the riders of the Classic ride of the Burgess Hill Rumble.
We still think that Yorks Hill will be a big challenge for the riders even though the new road surface makes it little bit easier now. We think that this hill will be were most will be starting to feel the bonk coming on so it should etch a nice feeling of accomplishment when they get to the top where we are positioning a feed stop.

unfortunately Lance can't make it this year but your all welcome to sign up now.

So far we have over 130 riders for the rumble with plenty of place at the moment. Maximum for this inaugural event is 200
  • Does anyone know if I can enter for the Classic, then decide on the day to do the Challenge instead?

James You can change on the day of the event if you wish. You have to make your mind up when you sign on though and make sure you tell the signing on official
  • OK, thanks for the response.

    6 days to enter
  • I've entered but made a typo in my email address so I haven't been sent the confirmation email (I've got the print out from the webpage however). I emailed srs.events@ntlworld.com but had no response. Am I missing some important stuff?

Also, are there time standards for this sportive, e.g. Gold, Silver Bronze average speeds?

    Hi James,

We need to check that your entry has been processed properly.

Can you give me a ring asap anytime between 6am and 8pm (after 3pm is best)

With regards to Standards, There is a cut off minimum 10mph around the course.

We will be having Standards for Gold Silver and Bronze. Details for these will be shown on the day depending on weather conditions.

    Cheers

a post on this thread which is more than a shameless plug by the organisers :-)

home, bike cleaned, showered and a quick minute or two to reflect on the event.

    > organisation
hmm... the car park, sign in venue and start line all in different places. queue at the sign-in largely as the list of riders was not in alphabetical order (!). what happened at the start? we got to the start line and errr.. thought we might as well go then. nobody from srs there at all. strange and rather anti-climatic.

    > timing chips
boo. no timing chips. i know it's not a race, but there can't be many people that don't want to know, having slogged their guts out around the course, how they have fared compared to the rest of the riders.

    > route signage
excellent. though there was one missing - at the very end! rather ruined the sprint at the end guys.

    > marshals
err.. sorry. that shouldn't be pluralised. one marshal. not sure how his location was decided, but with only 1 marshal over 95 miles this seems little more than a pointless gesture.

    > feed stations
only stopped at the 2nd (i did the 95 mile route). pretty basic to be honest; water, psp, bananas and flapjacks. you can't really get away with any less that that i think (dragon ride excepted of course :-)). the psp was dreadfully weak. saying "i hope it's strong enough" was little compensation. read the frickin container!! the last stop looked better stocked though.

    > route
great. i'm not an expert of the area but some good hills (toys, yorks, etc) and a tough undulating last 20 miles. very good.

    > staffing
some excellent people on the team. the chap at the end registering times and the fellow driving the grey transit both deserve a mention.

    > finish
what a treat. most rides i've completed are normally greeted with a bag of rubbish, however a sis water bottle and energy bar was great. free pasta and fruit at the end good too. and a decent selection of cakes :-)

    > overall
good day out. it would have been great had the weather had not been so unutterably dismal.

there is clear room for improvement but i'll be up for it again next year.

    p
  • I went along for this in the end, but did the Challenge instead of the Classic. It was a little disappointing to have no one at the start taking numbers/times etc. OK, the weather was appalling just beforehand, but the police were still there.

+1 on the route. The final 20m were pretty lumpy, but there were some enjoyable descents.

My time was 3:58 (and my number was 71). If anyone from srs is reading this, and if a results list is going to be put together, perhaps you can record my time.
  • I did the 65 mile version & it was a tough day out there. Weather was poor, could have been a lot worse, some of the steep descent sections were very tricky/dangerous. We did wonder if it would start at all while driving down. My bike & clothing was totally covered with mud, etc. I can hear the MTB'ers laughing out loud. It was a good route though, & I agree about the tough last 20, the climb up to Balcombe was really difficult with all sorts of "debris" on the road, plus rain, traffic & horses...!! Did'nt stop at any of the feed stations so can't comment on that.
I'd certainly do it again but echo the post above for some timing & there is a definate need for bronze, silver, & gold medals at the end. I took three wrong turnings due to poor signage & had no idea where the finish was at the end. So this could certainly be made better as it would have saved me 4 miles. My map/directions were reduced to pulp by the weather. Afterwards I could'nt understand why pasta was free but you had to pay for tea/coffee. My wallet was locked in someone else's vehicle....! After all the struggles the least you would expect is a mug of tea provided. All in all it definately was a challenge & if improved upon next year should become an extremely popular event on the calender.
  • I'd echo the above on the conditions - my poor bike looks like I've just done a particularly messy cyclo-cross!!

A very tough 95 miles, not helped by going out too fast which meant shot legs and morale for the last 30 miles, and a walk up the last quarter of a hill late on that I'd normally sail up.

As for the organisation, it seemed a little amateurish and did leave a bit to be desired but everyone had their heart in the right place and it could become a very good event by sorting the following small issues:

    1) Why no parking allowed at the start HQ when they had a bloody great car park! I saw a few bikers just park there anyway and I don't blame them!
    2) Some sort of rider timing mechanism is a must - just doesn't seem like a 'proper' sportive without them
    3) If you're going to start a sportive at 8am sharp, do have some people from the organisers at the start line! With the weather not getting any better we just sort of ambled off, leaving a couple of bemused coppers not knowing what they should be doing
    4) Give a bit more warning before an upcoming feed stop - it was sheer luck that I didn't go sailing past the first one. SIS drink dilution was variable at the stops, but I've never yet done a sportive where they were anything other than piss-weak so I knew what to expect...
    5) Some sort of finish line is also a must, as is an idea where the finish actually is. I stopped my watch once I reached the entrance of the HQ but I've no idea whether that was actually the finish.

On the plus side it was the friendliest sportive I've yet taken part in - what a nice crowd the Sussex bikers are!

  • It was my first sportive , doing the 65 miler

without having anything to compare it to I thought is was a good event, 3 good feeding stations(although I didn't stop at the last. The route wwas will marked out , luckily as my map was paper mache.

Shame there wasn't a finish line.

    but

those nice ladies providing the massages in the hall at the end, ended an enjoyable but painful day.
  • Well I had a fantastic day, despite the weather and thoroughly enjoyed the route and excitment of travelling in a convoy of so many friendly cyclists on roads I usually travel alone on.

I started a 9am so maybe I missed the ques and unmanned start/marshall points but I thought sign on was swift and the people manning the HQ and feed stations were very helpful and friendly.

Signage was good, although I new most of the route from local knowledge and looking at the map so many not have noticed any missing arrows. As for the feed staions I found them well stocked with both sweet and savoury snacks: and those homemade flapjacks were amazing (better than my mother's- but she'll never know). The musette and goodies inside are much apprieated to remember the day with.

In all, congratulations on a well organised event, as I and my friend whom I entered with enjoyed it immensely and will be repeating it next year (maybe move up from the Challenge to the Classic).
  • The various criticisms made of the ride here are echo'd by roadcyclinguk

    http://www.roadcyclinguk.com/news/artic ... attr=news1

It's a shame the promoter can't be bothered to respond to the comments when he could manage a daily visit to post a message informing us how many days to go on the run up to the event!

Not that you will have gathered from the srs website, which has not been updated since the ride, but there are some pictures here

  • I am one of the organisers and the reason why I haven't commented on the above is that its taken a few days to recover.

I have to say it was our first event and we really hope the first event teething problems didn't spoil the actual ride.

We intend on having a bigger team organising our next event in March and we will make sure to improve on the 1st event with all the things that have been suggested.

Thanks for all the nice comments and we will work on all the constructive criticisms to make the next event much much better.

On a positive note I was thanked personally by many people on the day for a well run event. I think people can see that we have a good course and although there are some improvements needed at the start and finish I think that we have an event that will get better and better. I would also remind people that the cost of entry was only slightly higher than some Road Races and we put on free food at feed stations free food at the end along with free massage and free SIS Goodie bag. Yes some things weren't great but they are things we feel we can definitely improve on for next time.

We welcome both positive and negative reports although we are already working on the negative ones. We would also like to say that we take our hats off to those that did ride in such terrible conditions we can't promise good weather for the next event but we can promise a much better run event for our March Rumble.
