I gets a phone call at work from my girlfriend at 03:30am telling me there has been an almighty bang and she thought someone was trying to break in - anyway she checked the house and found nothing unto ward. I was about to go for a ride today and i notice i had a flat tyre, upon further inspection it had exploded and that was the cause of the noise at 03:30. It looks like the innertube burst and took a section of the sidewall about 3inch long with it. Its along the tyre rim that gave way. The max pressure for the tyre is 45-75psi but i only had it up to 65psi. I had been out for a ridethe previous evening and all was fine. The tyre in question is a 700x38c (rear) off my carrera crossfire - ok i know its probably not the best bike in the world with the best tyrres but all the same is it normal for tyres to explode like this ?

I've heard of it happening when they get hot, with the bike left out on the sun or rather more alarmingly when the rim heats up from excessive braking, but at 3.30 am I doubt if it was either of these. Most likely a defective inner tube.

Could it not be sabotage because she's jealous of you're bike prowess :lol:

I once burst a tyre when I went over a bridge, as I got to the top there was a screw on the ground convieniently placed upright it seems, and it went right in. 85psi bursting through the tyre on a luckily unbusy road was quite scary. I was sure i felt the wheel lift up  When i took the tyre off later I found a small hole in the actual wheel where the screw went in and the wheel had buckled badly.

Do you think if i took the tyre and tube back to Halfords they would exchange it - ive only done about 600miles and the bike its self is only 4months old

    EDIT

Just came off the phone to halfords and explained to them that i wasnt even riding the bike when the tyre exploded nor was it over inflated - their reply "we will fit a new tyre for free when you purchase a new one from us"...................gee thanks guys for that generous offer, i could fit it myself for free ! What a nice gesture

Did you recently take the tyre off?

It normally happens within minutes but if the tyre is not seated properly or you trap the tube between the rim and the tyre the tube. The tube can swell up as it's not being contained and explode. It's happened to me before and alarmed the neighbours as well as scaring the **** out of me.

Dude, did you trace that, from a distance off a diagram drawn by a blind man using his feet from the description given to him by someone that could only use English quotes from the movie of \'Grease\'?
