Wheels developing play
I have a Trek 1400 and the original Bontrager wheels developed some play after about 6 months of use. I can grab the rim and wiggle the wheel from side to side almost a whole inch each way! It's as if there's a gap between the hub and the skewer. It started off just in the rear wheel but the front wheel has developed the same problem. If I bounce the bike on it's wheels I can hear a metallic knock sound, again like the skewer is loose in the hub, or at least something's loose around there.
I upgraded my wheels keeping the Bontragers for my turbo trainer. What's really worrying is my new wheels are starting to develop a bit of sideways play too.
Any ideas what this could be? Is there anything I can do or check?
Any advice would be very much welcome!

I think it is related to the desire to buy new wheels rather than fix the problem.
Check the park tool website and / or use a bike shop that has cone spanners.0
