Dry 'Teflon' Lube?

hi guys,
I ordered some finish line teflon lube because the description made it sound ideal for my summer road riding. It just seems so thin and smells like white spirit so I'm confused. Is this supposed to be used on chains and cassettes on its own? is it any good?
I was just wondering if anyone here has used it before, and can banish my concerns that its all somehow some big con and finish line are trying to break my bike...
I cleaned it very thoroughly today, but I haven' yet lubed it because of this dilemma!

If it's the one in the spray can with the red lid, I tend to only use it on pivot points and in cables. I go for a heavier lube (Cross Country etc) instead for the chain. However if used in dry conditions I think you can use it on chains (Wiggles say you can). However the aerosol is very wasteful for this.

You will find it very thin, i can wear out the finish line dry in about 15-20 miles then she starts squeaking.

Have a look on ebay for progold prolink, so far it's the cleanest and longest lasting lube ive used.
The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.

It contains a solvent to make it thin so it runs inside the rollers of the chain when you apply, leave it a few hours and it goes more like a gel viscosity that’s why they recommend you lube the day before you ride.
It is only good for dry dusty conditions, any rain and it washes off so keep some wet lube handy .
I have used dry lube on and off and find it works well; the only problem with the British summer is it never stops raining for long enough to use dry lube for a long period of time.

I always pre lube the day before

Ive been through quite a few lubes and i still find it too thin, it wears off too fast no matter the weather, white lightning epic is good but once it's one it can be a mare to remove.

Never tried rock n roll but it's had good reports, the prolink is still meant to be top dog though.

  • Teflon is like a sealant so will keep water out etc. Don't worry about the smell, it's not a stripper, teflon (PTFE) is good stuff - it's the kind of stuff that makes your pots and pans at home "non stick". :D

I've used different brands before (but basically the same stuff) on my chain and cassette and it works fine in light conditions. It's probably not the most cost effective option and I do use a thicker lube too. But, you wont do any harm with it!

Teflon isn't really good as a lube, have a look for slick 50 snake oil, you will find they call it ptfe as dupont won't legally allow them to call it teflon as they don't deem it suitable to be used on moving parts as it's a solid molecule.

Oddly i do use gt85 lol but that's just for a general spray on the bike to keep everything happy, anything loaded up is either greased or oiled.

Teflon is a trade name for PTFE which is a good lubricant, albeit it is a solid. The idea with the dry lube is exactly that - it goes on wet and then dries. Obviously the lubricant cannot therefore be a liquid or it wouldn't be a dry lube. The theory is that in dusty conditions, the dust sticks to a wet lubtricant making an abrasive paste in exactly the places you don't want, whereas a dry-lube doesn't attract the dust.
