I currently have a hardrock 2007 and my headset is loose. i took it apart and found the star nut thing had a bent leg and was just spinning. Any advice would you put a new star in or go for an alternative like the hope head doctor or something similar ???

Star nut. Hed Doctors are Hope less.0

If a hed doctor is like a use ring-go-star then get a star nut as I bought a ring-go-star to go with my nice new USE atom stem and just couldnt get it to keep the headset tight enough. Found out half way round the wall at Afan.http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7231/6933696372_603c9ce220_b.jpg

Is there a way to install a star nut without the proper tool? I've seen the stuff on parktool regarding how to fit them, but wondered if there was any other way.0

Long 6mm cap-head screw. Insert screw into SFN, offer up to steerer, hit top of screw while holding square until first set of tangs go in. Then tap left or right to ensure it is straight. Then hammer home correcting it's alighnment as necessary as you go."Internet Forums - an amazing world where outright falsehoods become cyber-facts with a few witty key taps and a carefully placed emoticon."0

best to screw on a couple of nuts and lock them and then screw the star nut on till snug against the nuts so that the installation force is not just put through the treads."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

or just buy the correct threadless nut setter tool, you can pick them up fairly inexpensively mine was £8.50 and does the job a treat. also as it has an important affect on how your headset and the front of your bike will feel, i reckon it is a worthwile investment.0

when I fitted my new forks, I tightened the old topcap bolt into the sfn all the way down, then put a socket extender over it (it fitted nicely) and then carried on with the rest of splashers method. then just remove the old topcap bolt. and continue fitting rest of the stem.Whenever I see an adult on a bicycle, I believe in the future of the human race.

Or learn how to use a Head Doctor properly. Fitted mine two years ago and only touched it once since (to fit a new headset).
Can't fault it, it didn't need a special tool to fit it (some people might say I'm a bit of a tool but that's another matter) and you can take it with you!0 -

unfortunately most people do not read how to fit it.
saying that i have two hope headsets but the hope head docs are sitting in the tool box. One is there cause the steerer wall was too thick to allow the head doc to fit. and the other cause the SFN was lighter (and already fitted) but may be getting a headlock fitted.
When correctly fitted they do workish. great for carbon steerers though."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Head Doctor works absolutely fine here.0

I still don't see the point - not when they are 10x the price of an SFN.0

I have never seen in 15 years a steerer tube damaged by an SFN to an extent where it failed! The damage is minimal.0

Just looked, and the hed doctor works differently to the ring-go-star but achieves the same thing. As before I would not recommend the ring-go-star.http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7231/6933696372_603c9ce220_b.jpg

I use the X-lite stem plug. Its never given me a bit of bother in 18 months.0

After struggling with a star-nut for a few months with constant re-tightening of the headset and stem bolts (the way described on Parktools!) the 'Gusset Universal Headlock' I ordered a in February finally got here! Since I fitted it I've had no problems with the headset at all!
When I fitted the SFN that came with my FSA 'Pig' headset, I used a 14mm spark plug socket and a small hammer to get it going. It went in straight and I had no problems keeping it straight - yet it still kept pulling back up the steerer tube when I used the bike.
I think the minimal sacrifice in weight is more than offset by the fact I've not had to touch the headset in 2 months! (It will be coming apart soon to re-grease the bearings - I've got to pull the engine and gearbox out of my MG Midget and re-build the 'box, so bike will be my only transport for a few weeks!)
Just my tuppence worth!
