Rumbling chain

Hi All,

I've got a 2007 Specialized Tricross which is fitted with an FSA road crankset and Shimano XT rear mech. I assume the "old" cassette was Shimano as well. Not sure who made the chain!

The rear end was getting very rattly over the passed few weeks and taking it apart over the weekend the cassette looked like the rivets had loosened and the sprockets wobbled all over the place. I ordered a new Sram PG-970 cassette and fitted it and now the bike makes a constant rumbling sound. I always assumed Sram and Shimano cassettes were compatible with each other, is this right? Or have a forgotten to do something when re-assembling it?

Cheers, John.

  • John, it might be that the chain is a bit worn, so isn't meshing perfectly with the cassette. As you may know, its common when changing a chain to also have to replace the cassette, so the same may well apply in reverse.

And is the chain properly lubed? It can suddenly get noisy if not oiled regularly.

  • I went to town on cleaning the chain and then re-lubing and it made an enormous difference.

Still not perfect though, and I decided the pedals weren't as smooth as they could have been so did a partial strip down and regrease of them and that improved matters as well, but still not perfect so......... I think it may need a new chain.

The bike has 3,600 miles on the speedo so a new chain and cassette at that mileage is to be expected I think.
