Gripshift markings out of line with numbers + gear issues

Bought a Shockwave SUS850 from Halfords (yeah I know but for £75 cant complain) to get back into mountain biking after years living in the city and a flat, now in a house and countryside. Sigh, how I miss my Muddy fox
Before I entrust the bike with the kids that built it, can someone help me possibly fix it myself? It's my first grip shift as before had the quickfire 'piano key' system.
The chain clicks when peddling as if about to change gear no matter the gear in use. I'm assuming the read derailer is at fault? But the grip ships also dont line up. The 'click' for each front derailer is long before the number.
Is it possible the grip-shift issue is related, and if so how can I reset it so the > marks and the numbers line up correctly?
Thanks,
Si.

sounds like cable tension. turn the adjuster to add some tension."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
