Is there a market for second hand carbon bikes?

Hello
I've a Cayo, about a year old, and although its a great bike I could do with a frame thats firstly a bit more forgiving (the Cayo is seriously stiff, and I'm into longer distance stuff) and secondly has a longer head tube. I had a back problem recently and have the bars at a 2" drop from the saddle. The 58cm Cayo has a head tube of 170mm - less than any other bike (BMC, pinerello, colnago, etc are all 180 - 190, Trek, Willier are 190 - 195 and Spesh tarmac is 205 for the equiv frame size)
Thing is I dont need two bikes, so to swap I'd like to shift the Cayo. I paid a grand for it, so realistically I'd like £650 or so.
However - Im not clear whether there is a market for second hand carbon bikes. Do people actually buy them? I cant remember ever seeing a thread on here where second hand bikes were discussed, and looking at ebay there's two Cayo's both with zero bids.
Any views? Am I stuck with the Cayo?
Cheers
Jon

i can't imagine for a second that you are stuck with the cayo - there is a market for 2nd hand carbon frames - why wouldn't there be?
£650 sounds a bit high to me though - but see what you get - try listing it in the classified on this forum and see what bites
good luck!0 -
I've bought 2nd hand carbon, so there must be some sort of market. I've seen Cayos sell on Ebay, but first stop is always small adds.
The 58 Cayo has a 57cm top tube with a 170mm head tube.
The equivilant Tarmac is the 56. Top tube is 56.5 with a 170mm head tube.
The Roubaix in 56 has a 56.5 top with a 190 head tube.
Most bikes with a 57 top will come up between 165 and 180 although my Ridley Compact is 190.0 -
There is a market for second-hand bikes, provided they're priced reasonably. As soon as you walk away from the bike shop, the bike drops in value by effectively removing the vat and dealer margin of 25%, so has a value of about £640 based on £1000 RRP. The rest depends on the condition and desireability of the model. There's a lot of competition at the £1000 price-point and once bitten, people want to sell and upgrade like yourself. You might want to try and sell the frame only and keep the other parts to put onto a new frame of your choice - a bit more aggro for you, but you could probably sell it for about £300 and buy a new frame for £500, incurring a net loss of only £200 rather than £350+ by selling the whole thing.Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0

Hi
I sold my Planet X procarbon on ebay and got about 60% of purchase price plus accessories for it. It was immaculate though.
Carl.
Still regret having to sell though. s0dding credit crunch0 -
I sold a Trek Madone frame on ebay last year. I listed the bike as whole bike with a reserve which was around what I would accept. the bidding fell short.
A week later I listed again as F&F only. I sold it for £550 which was only £200 less than the bidding got for a full bike. So I stripped all the components down (10 sp ultegra) and put them on my winter bike
The key with ebay is to hold your nerve, start with no reserve. With an hour to go my frame was only at £250 but there were 65 people watching. then in the last 10 minutes it all kicked off and rapidly went to the sale price.
Reserves and minimum opening bids put punters off. I think with no reserve people's mindset is more "I am getting a bargain here"0 -
I definitely think ebay is the way to sell - if you aren't happy with the price you get on ebay chances are you were being optimistic - just make sure you are willing to post though as pick up only can really limit your market.
it's a hard life if you don't weaken.0 -
Presuming it hasn't been crashed or damaged then you should be ok.
The two on ebay at the moment are a tad optimistic, especially the one trying to sell for more than the current wiggle price
I might be interested - if you are near me - but haven't got that much to spend.
Post a picture or two of it0 -
Cheers all, you've given me hope
Pirhana - yep, my mistake, I was comparing 58cm frames against 58cm frames (silly me) and as you say there's not as huge a difference as I thought. I like the look of the Willier Izoard (or whatever its called) - the 57cm top tube bike has a head tube of 195 - an extra inch should obviate my current need for a 17 degree stem
Kafka - not been crash or damaged, and only used for training and events, never commuting, etc. Its got some scuffing on the brake hoods from turning it upside down, but I dont see how that can be avoided. I'll take some pics, but it does look a bit odd with the large rise at the front, if i'm serious I'll need to refit the original stem to give it a more standard drop. I'm in Marylebone, London; if thats any good to you then let me know.
I'll start another thread for advice on bikes with longer head tubesand then see how it goes

Erm....easily avoided I would think by not turning it upside down. Why on earth would you turn a nice bike upside down? It's easy enough to fix a puncture without doing so and for more serious maintenance a stand is essential if you've got a bike as good as yours. Utlegra STIs cost 150 quid - you'd have to be rich or insane to rest your bike on them.
