SPD Compatible Road Shoes ?

Looking for a pair of SPD compatible road shoes, road orientated ie not MTB or lace up style touring shoes.
Last pair I had were Shimano with double velcro straps, although these were satisfactory they tended to to be a bit loose & ideally would have had a triple velcro strap.
Most road style shoes on the market tend to be LOOK cleat type orientatedwith the usual issue of walking to the cafe stop.
Any suggestions welcome

Speciallised Sport Road but they are quite a wide fitting and 3 velcro straps. They have rubber lumps on the toe and heel but you still end up walking on the cleats. Not such a problem with Keo cleats.100% ME!
Do you think I would be this bad on drugs?0 -
i use Sidi Dominators which are considered a MTB shoe i think but are basically the same as the Genius and very stiff so good for road use. Many riders i know swear by them.M_G0

The Sidi Bullet is your basic 3-strap shoe. It's the MTB equivalent of the Zeta so will take a SPD cleat. Sidi seem to do quote a bit of this (i.e. the same upper appearing on both MTB and Road soles). Have a look here.0 -
If you want to be able to walk normally then a standard road shoe will be no good - you need to be looking at an MTB shoe. Higher end ones nowadays are almost as stiff as road shoes so pretty much as efficient for pedalling. My recommendation for a 3 velcro strap shoe would be a Specialized Expert - nice stiff carbon sole, and personally at least I find them comfy and they work well on a road bike (I've ridden 100 mile sportives in them).0

Bought a pair of Shimano road shoes from Decathlon with holes for SPDs . 2velcro straps and a ratchet. Comfy on the bike but usual difficulty walking off it.0

Thanks for all the replies & suggestions. The problem with MTB - SPD compatible shoes I find are twofold
a) Weight they tend to be quite a bit heavier than road orientated shoes.
b) Stack height - MTB shoes tend to have a greater stack height than road shoes.
My existing shoes which have now seen better days (but are ideal) are a Shimano "Sport Touring" shoe & have the number SH-T 071 in the tounge. They used to make the SH-T 092 & 070. All of these are SPD compatible and can be walked in easily, however they are apparently no longer made & any old stock that I have located are not my size.
I am sure that some manufacturer out there must make a shoe that "fits the bill", I can't be the only person looking for a shoe of this type? Or am I?0 -
wiggle have touring shoes, which seem to be recessed cleats and have triple vecro straps. not a huge range but may do the job.

b) Not sure where you get that info from - the only difference is due to the different stack height of the pedal systems as the soles on both are pretty much identical nowadays (with the obvious addition of tread on the MTB shoes, but that makes no difference to stack height). Given a modern carbon sole, they're almost certainly lower stack height than your current shoes.
I could understand if you didn't like the aesthetics of an MTB shoe for riding on the road, but from a practical riding POV, current high end MTB shoes are superior in almost every way whilst on the bike to your current shoes and what you seem to be looking for.0 -
Thanks everybody for your replies & advice. Going to look at web for MTB shoes that may be suitable especially the Specialised Experts.
Thanks again.0 -
I was interested in this too as there is a bit of a trek from the bike rack to get into work, plus I was worried about wrecking the floors.
anyway, regarding the specialized expert shoes, has anyone found them cheaper than at J E James (£49.99) 07 model which I assume doesn't matter...

apologies if we aren't allowed to post links - I am new here.0 -
There are other retail outlets doing this shoe (simply do a Google search) but JEJames are the cheapest I have found so far. Unfortunately they only have a limited range of sizes left & none my size.
I have discovered that www.cyclebasket.com (01874 730368) stock a Shimano road/touring shoe (RT 51)in grey/black that is SPD specific. It is ideal for walking in & is three strap fastening, but does not have the heavily cleated sole of MTB shoes - depends what you are after.
At the moment they do not have my size in stock but are receiving new stock in the next 7 to 10 days.
They also stock another Shimano road touring shoe the RT30 in blue/black this has a two strap fastening, not sure what sizes they currently have in stick though.
Hope this is of help.0
