Hi All,

I've got a Planet X Road Ti but I'm looking to change the chainset so it's all Shimano, preferably Ultegra (as Dura Ace is expensive) - At the moment it has a FSA Gossamer Compact Chainset 172.5mm 50/34 and I was wondering what I exactly need as I'm not sure about types/model numbers, etc

I imagine I'll need a Hollowtech 2 BB as well - is there anything else I need to consider?

Thanks for any help

Easy. You simply buy a new Ultegra crankset(compact or standard). Buy new outboard
bearings. Install on bike per the directions that come with them. Ride.
Not trying to be a wise ass, but how is this that much of a so called "upgrade"???
Outboard bearing cranks and B/B's are very simple to install and remove. Be sure to follow the instructions as it is not simply a "slam it together" type of thing.

Some minimums - Go for the 4550 or the R600 - and make sure to get some HT 2 BB Cups to go with it - you could get the 4550 for £ 40 or maybe the the R600 for £60 and the cups for £15. Obviously - you can get a better/lighter chainset if you want to spend more (ie, the R700).

I've got £1 says whatever you put on will be heavier than the Gossamer and you won't notice any difference in the stiffness. The Gossamer with the integrated axle, FSA call it the Mega Exo, is used by a few FSA sponsored pro riders, Cancellera being one that comes to mind.

If it's the compact that bothers you why not just change the rings?

The Gossamer must be pretty stiff, as that's what Cancellera uses over the more expensive carbon FSA jobbies.

It might not be the best looking chainset, but I bet it's better functionally than an Ultegra one.

  • It's a brand thing. it isn't the weight. The man wants Shimano not FSA.

Could you double check that these would be okay:

That's correct, everything else on the bike is either Shimano Ultegra or Dura-Ace and want to keep with the theme.

    Thanks again for the help

It's not the mega-exo unit but the cheap version - they were probably a better OE deal for planet x. I've just sold mine as I'm going to a triple chainset. The ISIS bottom bracket version was not very stiff; I was a bit disappointed with it (granted I'm 13 1/2 stone and tend to grind a bit) and I've got very limited experience of different cranksets!

Besides, you need a silver crankset with a Ti frame, especially to match up with the rest of the gruppo :D

I recently got R700 from Merlin Cycles for £60 - might be worth a look
