I'm hoping you lot can help me out with something! Just bought my 705 charged it up and have loaded the CD on my work PC. Looking through the instructions I got to the section about Navigation, click through the menu on the Garmin and where it says it should list Addresses as an option all I have is Favourites? I'll be honest, i'm as yet to hook it up to my laptop and download any software, would that unlock the navigation function? Or do I need to get a City Navigator SD card. I'm not too concerned as navigating wasn't the primary reason for purchasing but it'd be good to have access to all functions!

Cheers

I believe you would need City Navigator.

Well you do have a base map as standard and it really is virtually useless.

Get an SD card - I got a UK/Eire map on micro SD from Pixmania for £29 + £3 P&P! It's the cheapest out there.

I would also recommmend looking at the Frank Kinlan site (frank.kinlan.co.uk) since there is a very useful mini forum on the Edge 705 and how to get the best out of it. Plotting routes, uploading etc is difficult at first (it does get easier) but this site and all the readers experiences should help you out no end.

Keep us posted how you get on with the Edge 705 - I absolutely love mine!!

When it comes to navigation there are routes and courses, and despite loads of research I still don't really understand it :? It is all described on Frank Kinlan though, so anyone with a little intellect (unfortunately I don't have much) should have no problems :D

For navigation there are many free programmes available to download to plot routes/courses including Marengo, Mapmyride, google maps etc. I highly recommend Marengo - It is the easiest to use, and more importantly it is easy to transfer the route to the Edge 705.

When saving the route - save the GPX coding on to a notepad and call it "route.gpx". Do not save it on a word document as you can't get it in to the required GPX format. When saving it to the Edge save it straight in to the GPX file on the Edge itself - by dragging and dropping or the good old copy and paste.

Please do look at the Kinlan website (i'm not trying to "plug it" but it is a useful aid as the user manual on routing is c**p! and the people that use it are VERY, VERY helpful). One word of warning - the website mentions that the DVD Navigator is the best to buy at c. £140 since you can cut and paste areas of the map on to the Edge, but I find the SD card and the method above is more than adequate.

My only gripe is that the Edge 705 does not work with Motionbased - it is only compatible with Garmin Connect which is still very much a work in progress. Hopefully Garmin will sort it out soon so that Connect has the same level of information as Motionbased.

Hope I have been of some use!

I'm able to upload from my Edge 705 to Motion Based. Do you have a specific problem or is somethiong not working as they say it should?

The Garmin Communicator that you donwload to link to Garmin Connect should work with Motion Based as well. You can't use the Motion Based agent with the Edge 705.

Motionbased is not compatible with the Edge 605 or Edge 705 :(

It's a shame because, IMHO, Motionbased is far more superior than Garmin Connect with more detailed information.

I thought it was Garmins intention to effectively close down Motionbased and move everyone over to Garmin Connect (which, according to a website I found, was due to be by end of April 2008 but has been put back to September/October 2008).

Garmin Connect is supposedly still a 'skeleton' and work in progress so should get better. Here's hoping hey!

But the Edge 705 does work with Motionbased, I use motionbased.. As said; its much better than Garmin Connect. I just find motionbased is so damn sloooow.

Not true, I use my Edge 705 with Motionbased via the Garmin Communicator. It is true that the Motionbased agent doesn't work with the Edge 705 but everything else does.

As for Motionbased being replaced by Garmin Connect, as yoou mentioned Motionbased will be open until at least October. It wouldn't surprise me if that gets extended again due to development issues Garmin are having with Garmin Connect. I was speaking with a Garmin rep at an event recently and he told me that the intention was to make Garmin Connect at least as good as Motionbased in terms of features but that the overal development process was taking longer than intended.
