Yet another knee issue - pain in back of knee

Hi,

Sorry to post yet another knackered knee problem, I've not found anything similar in the first 3 or 4 pages of search results though :?

I seem to have developed a pain in the back of my right knee. I've had it a little since I started cycling to work about once a week. I usually try and get out on the MTB a couple of times a week, but I've been cycling on the roads more during the week.

I cycled a 36 or so mile stretch of the south downs way on 22nd, then did about 10 miles at fairly high intensity one evening mid-week, then cycled to work an back on Friday.

I've noticed slight pain in the back of my right knee before. I can't say if I had it or not on 22nd, but I can't recall having this on my MTB previously. I have had it on my road bike before, but not to the extent I did on Friday. The big difference this time is I still have a slight pain in the back of the knee now particularly if I bend it up. It almost feels as though something in the back right of my knee is being compressed and causing the pain.

I started using SPDs a few months ago, when I got the bike I ride on the roads, on both bikes. I do tend to 'pull up' with them during the pedal stroke too. I'm right handed/footed, and I tend to try and protect my left knee as I've injured it quite a bit in the past.

Has anyone had similar? I imagine (hope?) it's just a strained tendon or similar, possibly from pulling up on the pedals, but it's a bit frustrating and concerning. Alternatively, could this problem be caused be cleat position/bike setup?

Cheers,
Steve

    You've twanged a hamstring.
Rest it for a couple of days - if it still hurts, see a physio - should be easyish to sort.

Cheers mate, you were spot on!

Didn't shift though and went to see a physio at the local leisure centre last Wednesday. Should be pretty easy to sort, I've been given some stretches, and have another appointment on Saturday. Should be sorted by the following week. No cycling during though.

seems to have been caused by a combination of a few things - milage, new SPDs and I'm shortening my hamstrings apparently by not stretching properly so it was worth going. She's also recommended changing to some pedals with more float to protect my knees, at least on the road bike.

    Cheers,
    Steve

    Nice one Steve!

SPDs seem to be giving a few people knee problems. I used to use them but now stick to flats. Done my knee in twice doing martial arts so very careful!

Stretching is SO important - sounds like you saw a good physio.

Sounds like you're on the right road to recovery.
