The diameter of the post will be marked on the post near the bottom of it.

Thomson Elite is a superb bit of kit.

As for saddles, everyone has a different shaped butt, so it's all down to personal preference. Try some of your mates saddles out.

My fave is the WTB Rocket V

    cheers for reply

none of my mates cycle lol

as you can see its only a cheap post and there are no numbers, looks like they have all been worn away. that post looks nice but should have said looking a little lower in price

would it be worth getting a few cheap saddles to get used to shape etc, ive got a big ass lol

I think (Don't quote me on this!) that it's a 27.2mm diameter post on a GT Aggressor, we had one in our workshop last week & that had a 27.2mm post, dunno if they've changed it since then as the one in the shop was quite elderly ;)

Seatposts are much of a muchness. Save a lot of cash without noticing the difference in performance (as a seatpost does not perform!) and get something like a SMICA.

For adjustability(seat angle) the RaceFace Evolve XC posts are very good:

Thompson Elite and Charge Spoon Ti are my weapons of choice. Good prices for both can be found on eBay (new in box) and www.wiggle.co.uk
  • Yep, can confirm 27.2mm on an 06/07 GT Aggressor

SMICA if it fits. Cheap, light strong, no reason to pay any more than this.

I don't understand why everyone goes nuts about Thompson seatposts, but then I've never had one.

Is it possible to discern any performance advantage from them?

I usually just browse the web and see what I can get cheap.

Unless it breaks, it has done its job. It is hard to get excited about them. Some weigh a lot more than others, which is where Thomson has a little advantage - it is light, with a elliptical bore in the shaft to increase strength and reduce weight. One piece shaft and head is more durable.

BUT.. the SMICA has all this, is lighter, is forged (should be stronger) and is half the price. And not one report of them breaking.

Carbon posts can offer vibration absorption, as does titanium.

If you'd like to stay the Easton to match your stem, the EA50 can be had for £30 on CRC. I only chose it over the EA30 because its listed as being Cold Forged.

Titec carbon post myself, very cheap but can't remember where from I'm afraid, wiggle or crc probably! Either the placebo effect is very strong or I can certainly feel a difference between this and aluminium.

It's a very subtle difference, and it's harder to spot on a full-sus frame, but I'm sure it carbon posts do take the edge off the ride a bit.

I'm sure Thompson make great stuff, but I still fail to understand why they have this sort of hallowed reputation - when the price is comparable to some decent carbon posts.

OK, I suppsoe I do - but I think some people must just buy them because it's a box to tick on their bike spec...

    Hope hubs & DT/Mavic Rims - check
    Easton Monkey Bar - check
    Chris King headset - check
Thompson stem and seatpost - check

    Thompson Elite's.
If your bike is 30.9mm I've got a nearly new one for sale - a layback.

Ahem, how can i put this delicately? for those of us above a certain weight carbon stems, bars and seat pins are most definitely "consumables". I'm happy using a Thompson pin and would definitely never use a crbon stem, however pretty. Best price on Thompson at present seems to be Merlin.

But there are plenty of alloy posts and stems that are much cheaper and do just as good a job!
