Endura Singletrack shorts - look "normal" but are superb for MTBing.

and Altura Nevis jacket for keeping off the rain.
Both cheap, both great.
Don't forget a wicking base layer - Patagonia make the best IMO.0 -
thanks for the tip about shorts they look good it was shoes that i am after.regards,steve0

Five ten shoes are what you want as they are mega grippy and very comfy.0

Another vote for the 'Five Tens' here too!0

Any idea where you get these from please dealers etc thanks steve0

For the Altura Nevis jacket subscribe for 6 months to MBR. It costs £23.40 and you get the £50 jacket free! 6 free mags as well! I believe Stif stock Five 10s/"Melancholy is incompatible with bicycling." ~James E. Starrs0

I wear Shimano MP66 shoes. Super comfy and look pretty smart too.
Do get rather heavy if they get soaked though, as i found at the weekend over Ilkley Moor.0 -
I wear basic Shimano SPDs shoes without cleats on flat pedals - get a stiff sole but can still walk and none of the horrors of clip ins.0

I was thinking of doing just that...using Shimano SPD shoes on flat pedals...does the stiff sole make cycling much easier?0

Ross - I reckon so.
Just got the basic ones about two years ago which are now dirt cheap:

Leave the cleats off (cleats come with pedals anyway) and use the stickers to block off the hole on the bottom.
You can walk in them, they grip well and the stiffness does really help pedalling. I'm suprised no one has cottoned on and made a stiff soled flat pedal shoe yet - I find skate style shoes about as useful as a Labour economic adviser.0 -
thanks for all the advice i hadn't considered shoes/pedals without cleats as an option.i had assumed that i would have needed them for grip etc.it seems that i am wrong again and the ones you suggest would provide plenty of off /trail /atb road grip.now left with the issue of which to buy the mp66 or the 5/10's with some alternative pedals.again thanks for the helpful advice.steve.0

So please are there any benefits with one shoe type v the other ie spd's or the five tens or the respective pedal systems.thanks steve0
