I’ve just changed the drivetrain on my training / commute bike from Veloce tripple to Veloce double: short cage rear mech, 53/39 rings, running on 25/12 cassette.

Can’t get it to change on to the largest rear sprocket. Have twiddled with adjust buttons, and tried dragging by hand, but seems there is no more play left in the rear mech to take it over..

Any suggestions?

Do I need a med cage? (which would bother me somewhat seeing as just shelled out for me short)

  • i might be stating the obvious here but before you tightened the cable in the rear mech did you make sure you'd clicked the ergo to the limit for the smallest sprocket?
do you have a spare click at the small sprocket end?
a mate had that problem and this was the cause.

You don't need a medium cage for 53/39 x 12/25. If there is not enough movement to get the chain on the largest sprocket after moving the limit adjusters you haven't synched the mech position with the Ergo's ratchet correctly. I expect if you go down the cassette to the smallest sprocket the Ergo will go on one more click. You need to reattach the gear cable after lining up the limiter with the smallest sprocket and the Ergo is set for that same sprocket.
I'd rather walk than use Shimano

Thought I had zeroed the ergo to the smallest. But will give it another go. Cheers.
