How often should you change your helmet?

I was recently told that I should be looking to replace my helmet at least once every two years, regardless of it's visible condition, lack of surface impact etc...

Does this sound right to anybody else or is someone trying to make a quick buck?

    Not sure about cycle helmets.

I know they recommend motorbike helmets are changed every 2-3 years, that they also have a shelf life and you should also change it after an impact.

Must admit - I tend to be a little less caring about my cycle helmet. I have just bought a new one and my last one is less than 18mths old. The old one:
    - I have crashed a few times, including one road impact at around 20mph
    - has had a number of scrapes from overhanging branches.
    - it has been dropped
    - I lost count of the off's I've had mtb'ing
    - there are visible dents and scratches on it.
    - it cost me less than £10 from Aldi

I still use the old one regularly! ! !

I replace mine when I crash badly and smack it in.

    So quite often

well giro's crash replacement stops after 3 years so that'd be my limit. although i've had 2 crashes after 6 months...

my current helmet is 5 years old.

they seem very overpriced, so I'm keeping this one for now.

Can't say I'd be changing mine unless it took a large impact. It's not like it gets thinner or the helmet starts to decompose after 2 years - hopefully!

If they fade, then replace them.

    Fading = degrading (!)
