When I took my deore cranks/BB off there was a drive side BB spacer.

Little while later went to put them back on again and I've lost the spacer - so just looking for a replacement.

Ok now we need a bit more info. as the Deore bb has 3 possible width spacers. 0.7mm 1.8mm and 2.5mm

So what is the bike? make model and year?
Oh and a spacer to use a 7spd cassette on an 8/9 hub is 4.5mm

the actual cassette spacers on a 9spd cassette are 2.56mm so usable if the internal diameter is greater that or equal to 35mm.

Edit just measured up a freebody and it is 34.5mm so a cassette spacer with a round inner edge could work. but one with the steps in will need lots of filing as that is about 32mm

Thanks for the replies, didn't realise things would be so technical.

Ive got a 05 Scott Scale (alu). Square taper bb, Deore HT1 cranks.

Sonds like you may have the wrong bb in there, the bb shell is 68mm and the bb should be the same width. If someone has fitted a 73mm bb then you would need a 5mm spacer but that would mess up the chain line.

Also i thought the HT1 cranks were octalink? (same issue though).

I've just removed a deore chainset which says "Hollowtech" on it from my bike -it had a square taper BB. Not sure if that makes it a HT1 though.

    Hmm..

Nick I think you are right - Just did some measurements and I don't think the correct bb has been fitted. Has that why the changing has been poos all this time? I though it was just the low normal mech. Will try with a 68mm bb.

By the way, I bought the bike new a few years ago from the london based chain we all know and love (to hate that is). Even had the gears adjusted by them a few times. I so wish they were good.

    Learning myself now.

    Thanks again.

Cranks definately say ht1 and is square taper.

There was one version of hollowtech deore with square taper cranks - quite rare! However makes no difference to the actual problem here if octalink or square taper.

Could be a 73 in a 68, or an E type botom bracket which would need a spacer if you dont have an E type front mech (ie bottom bracket mounted mech)

I'm confused. Is the Deore chainset a new Hollowtech II external BB chainset?

If so it should have 3 off 2.5mm spacers for a 68mm shell or 1 off 2.5mm spacer for a 73mm shell, the other spacer not being required if you use an E-type front mech.

The spacers used on some 9 speed freehubs (like Mavic) before you put on the cassette (as opposed to the inter-cog spacers) are the same as these HTII spacers.

If it's not an HTII type BB, it should not have any spacers, it should just be the right one for the bike.

good to see i am not the only one getting confused.

there should be some info on the bb which will help show the size etc....
