Good route from the City to Canary Wharf?

Hi - need to pop over to Canary Wharf later today and was wondering if anyone had a good route. I don't really fancy going the way I drive (through the Limehouse link). Has anyone got any recommendations from Bishopsgate? Does the Thames Path go the whole way from Tower Bridge?

Ta.
Spencer.

Spencer - almost. You have to weave a bit behind a few buildings but it's a pretty pleasant ride overall and well signposted. Will take a bit longer though.

Used to walk it a lot when we lived in Canary Wharf.

There's a bike path from the Tower of London all the way to the back of the Limehouse link along Royal Mint St / Cable st.

If you go round the minories loop as you come under the bridge it's on your left.

Once you get to the end of cable st go straight across the big road and go right. 20 M further down there's a gate into a park - again a footpath / combined cyclepath. Follow this it goes over a brodge over teh tunnel, down a slope, turn left, follow road round to right, another left onto narrow St and you are heading to the Wharf, pull onto the Thames path to the right or keep going and pick up the big road onto the estate.
Fixed gear for wet weather / hairy roadie for posing in the sun.

becareful though the cycle path has some funny give way sections and it's a mare for cars turning right in front of you... not to mention peds fricking everywhere

I use the A13(Commercial Road) I find it less hazardous

Oh for gods sake...I use this route EVERY DAY and am yet to have a run in with these "mare cars"!

The street is quite quiet, certainly a hell of a lot more quiet than Commercial Road and only the first part of the cycle path has the give way road markings on the cycle path.

Oh I don't know mate - its very unpredicable :o
you have pedestrians - shops - schools - side roads - hostile natives - cars - WVM - a Fire Station - a Tube Station - switched off pedestrians -

I do the A13 and do a right at (I think) Butchers Way then its through that park bit to the left and over the Tunnel aproach into Narrow Street ...

    Cannary Wharf as above :)

Sorry. I'm another Cable Street hater.
Two way cycle lane on a one way street with side streets every 50 yards. Doom.

I use Commercial Road every day instead.

going to the city you get people turning in front of you loads when you get the the car wash (this has lessened now in the summer and road works)

I prefer using the road as it's not like a dirt bike track but there are always queues etc etc

if you like it stick with it, I prefer the bus lanes on commerical road... the peds are more predictable there as they are scared of the cars... they're not scared of us... Well except for that girl I knocked down on cable street the other day, she'll be more careful...

I might give commercial rd a try tonight - my regular trip is down Cable st but it is a crap surface.

Of course the downside is that I don't consider myself in the "Game" until I'm off the other end of it and back on the roads - this way I'm playing much earlier....

part of the problem is that when I get to the City end I always get lost trying to beat my way back to the embankment....

Well in the end I went down Commercial Road turned towards the Limehouse Link and then through Narrow Street. Have to say that Commercial Road was not too bad - although the bus lane was great there were lots of buses and due to the heat it all got a little smoggy. Nevermind.

The junction at Aldgate always makes me feel a little like I am taking my life into my own hands though!

Still overall not too bad. Now if only they'd keep the lifts running later at the Greenwich foot tunnel (my journey home from there)... A few beers, lots of food and carrying my bike up the stairs did not sit well at all!

.... hmmm rereading that did make me seem a bit whingey but I am not really... just started the whole commuting thing on the bike and feeling really good about it. My journey to work is 1hr 15 on the train but on a bike it is 45mins. Bargain!

Correct me if Im wrong BUT this is pretty much the end of Cable Street isnt it? Or are you talking about going the other way? :)

Thats fortunate, Im yet to discover this dir track you talk about.

Yes those damned pesky pedestrians! It is annoying when they walk in the centre of the bike track, but lucky I got a bell to warn them Im coming to turn them in to hood ornaments :)

I think the only thing you forgot to say was "real cyclists use main roads".

I tried commercial road heading back into town rather than Cable St. Each to his own and all that but I thought it was worse.

More tarffic lights, more queuing traffic and when you get into the chicanes at the other end it's a pain in the arse and the road surface is even worse than the "worst" bit of road on my commute the Lower Thames St impact area between the bottom of Tower hill and the VW garage on the big junction.

I don't have a problem with the junctions/peds on cable st - just need to ride like a dalek (moving head not exterminating)

The cycle lane traffic lights on cable St are a pain in the ass. Stay on RED for far too long.

Either route IMO is as good and bad as each other. Both have good sections and bad sections. Trying to dodge drunken peds at 8.30 last night down cable St. was a bit concerning.
