I have been using spds for some years now - have them set fairly loose - and have no real problems unclipping.

I have recently upgraded to spd-sl - and I have found that my natural technique is to turn my heal inwards to release - works ok - no real exit problems - anyone else do this ? - and is this ok ? - I wear quite hefy othotics and have stiff ankles - dunno if this is why i find this technique easier - can't seen to get leverage on an outward twist - my foot seems to move in the shoe !!

I twist in aswell - it's fine, you've just got to make sure you don't twist your foot into the spokes of the rear wheel.
