Also subsequently found that a 26 sprocket is the upper limit of what a short cage can handle :D

Plenty people have successfully run a 29 tooth sprocket on a short-cage Campagnolo rear mech
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

Now if the red stripes had been claret, that would really have cut the mustard...

I've recently purchased an upgrade, which I haven't installed.
After posting on this forum I was advised that a 53-39 chainset and 12-27 cassette would work with a short cage rear deraileur.
Can some one please confirm this as this thread has made me slightly worried; and I haven't taken the deraileur out of it's packaging yet.

You won't have a problem. Campagchris posts above that he runs a 28 sprocket with a short cage, and so have I in the past.

In Cumbria but brought up in Gateshead - used to be in Gosforth RC then Barnesbury CC.
  • I run s 39/53 with a 29 rear or a short cage Centaur and it works although the mech is on its limit on big/big and small/small. You have to make sure that the chain length is correct.

Just for information 39 to 29 is not low enough to get me up Hardknott pass in the lakes!
Racing is rubbish you can\'t relax and enjoy it- because some bugger is always trying to get past.
