How long do helmets last?

I've had my current Giro helmet for around 5 years, and although I realise it should be replaced if involved in any heavy impact, how regular should you change otherwise?
Even though mine's not had any big direct hits, it has been used on and off road during which its had the odd little ding from branches, plus maybe the odd small knock in transit etc, and the pads are starting to fall to pieces. The outer shell isn't marked, but the edges of the polystyrene core have small dents.
What's the perceived wisdom on how often a helmet should be changed - I read sometime ago that it was recommended they should be changed at least every 3 years if used regularly - is this the case or is it manufacturer hype to increase sales?

Carlsberg don't make cycle clothing, but if they did it would probably still not be as good as Assos

I'm pretty sure Giro recommend replacing them every 3 years. I've got an Atmos due for replacement at the moment. Time for a nice new Ionos0

Yeah - I did try an Ionos on this morning. Very comfortable and fitted well, with the bonus of my wife not baulking at the price and telling me to buy it there and then. Want to try on a Spesh 2D first though before deciding.Carlsberg don't make cycle clothing, but if they did it would probably still not be as good as Assos0
