It hasn't been tightened before, and I take your point, it might not need to be replaced. But I want to get it out to check it, and don't know which is the right tool... how do I know whether the hollotech one is the right one?0

Sinjun is it the 9 speed octaink?
My 9 speed Ultegra was octalink and you need the following tools:
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/ProductDetail.aspx?Cat=cycle&ProdID=4000000799&n=Shimano%20Bottom%20Bracket%20Removal%20Tool
and also a crank puller
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/ProductDetail.aspx?Cat=cycle&ProdID=4000000806&n=Shimano%20Crank%20Extractor
If it's the Hollowtech you need
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/ProductDetail.aspx?Cat=cycle&ProdID=5360009198&n=Shimano%20BB%20Tool%20For%20Hollowtech%20II%20Cups
Best way to determine it is have a look at

Go to Road bike then Ultegra0 -

You're positive it's coming from the bottom bracket? I only say this because lots of times
it seems to be coming from there but other possibilities exist. Making sure where the noise is coming from. How to do this???? That's where it gets tricky. Park Tools website
has a noise finder help sheet(or so I'm told). Give that a try before you spend money on something that may or may not need to be replaced. I have actually used a stethoscope
on my bike to try and pinpoint certain squeaks, creaks, and ticks.

Agreed, 9sp Ultegra is Octalink I'm sure : I fitted it to my TT/tri bike0 -
Have you ever done this before??? If not, get some help(repair manual, knowledgeable friend). It's not a big deal but there is always the possibility of screwing things up.

Thanks AC, you've put me on the right track... it's octalink, but I think I need this BBT-18 tool

rather than that Wiggle one.0 -

Thanks Dennis. I'm pretty sure it's the BB, since it's once per pedal revolution and I've checked pedals, cranks and chainrings....0 -
Sinjun, if it's 9 speed ultegra you need this tool,
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/ProductDetail.a ... val%20Tool
from ACMadone's reply. Ignore the castellations on the outside of the BB cups. When the tool is fitted, put a Q/R spindle through it to lock it firmly in place, otherwise the force you apply will just tear it out and after a few tries you'll have wrecked the BB cup. Also, Ultegra cranks are self extracting, you do not need a crank puller. If the cranks are fitted with the correct 15mm allen bolt, and the little alloy centre cap, then you just unscrew the allen bolt with the centre cap still in place, and the cranks are automatically forced off.0 -
Thanks for putting me right Bill - I see now that those 8 castellations on the outside of the cups are a red herring (why are they there?) And you've saved me £12.99 because I was about to order the crank extractor. Good tip too about the QR spindle, which I saw somewhere else.0
-
The castellations are for the people who didn't use a Q/R spindle
If you want to save another few quid, use a 105 bottom bracket - once it's fitted you'll never know the difference. Smear everything with good copper grease and it'll always come out again.0 -
Sinjum... Got one of the genuine Shimano ones lying around at home doing nothing0
-
Only just seen this... it's too late, I bought one. Thanks very much for the offer anyway AC.
I actually got the Dura Ace one on special offer since Ultegra ones apparently no longer available. Should have gone for the 105 version because it turns out the DA one isn't a sealed unit but requires maintenance. Oh well, at least it means the tool gets to be used more than once.0 -

Most prob is BB, but I had a once per revolution click that sounded like it was from down there and it turned out to be an undertightened seatpost. Because your weight shifts about in keeping with pedal rev's it can often elicit such noises from other parts of the bike (even bars or stem).0
